Greetings, 

 

Welcome to the Cooper studio, Jefferson, Iowa, where today, due to circumstances beyond my control, and even though it's a Tuesday, today is run-day.  Get out there and go.  A couple of miles down the bicycle trail and all of that.

 

A couple of months ago I wrote a post that started out with running.  post  It focused on getting the timing right, in light of school traffic.  Well, school is currently on vacation, but the timing of the run is still pretty darn important, only now we have to blame it on the weather people, as they predict their heat&humidity lofty highs for Iowa July.

 

And what does all of that mean??  A change up.  My running shoes met the trail about an hour earlier than the usual. Beat that heat and humidity.  If it's too blazing hot to run in the sun, then change it up and run an hour earlier.  Don't keep going with the same-old, same-old.  Different conditions demand a different schedule.

 

And you know by reading this blog in the past, that I'm required :) to relate that to art/painting somehow, don't you?  Change up. 

 

How about change up and the art fair artist-exhibitor?   It's not hard to find a cluster of artists at an art fair, before opening on the second day, lamenting the economy and how that makes it so hard to sell a painting.  Aren't they ripe for a change-up?  How many of them are looking for it, with both eyes open?  And how many of them are just doing it the way they've always done it?

 

I know I've aired this belief before, but it's been brought to my attention, that it needs to be thrown out their again:  there are too many art fairs that are the same-old, same-old.  Nothing's been done to improve or grow (except for the price!) or enhance.  And year after year, the same artists keep buying an exhibit space, hoping to sell a bunch of art.  Even though they didn't last year.  Or the year before.  Where's the change-up?

 

It seems logical for art fair directors to keep going with a show as long as artists will buy that 10 x 10 chunk of week end real estate.  And that puts the ball in our court as artists.  Do we really need THAT art fair?  Maybe when applications open for next time, we should just ignore it.  Will we keep paying $595 for that 100 square feet?  Hmm.  Maybe it's time for a change-up.

This is a show that is a part of the 9-day Summer Celebration, and the fine art is located in Hackley Park.  The surrounding streets are designated for low end crafts, BS, and everything else.  More about that shortly.

Thunderstorms dogged setup and the first half of Friday for this 3 day show.  While we arrived early, at 12 pm on Thursday and set up as soon as we arrived, the late arrivals that night and the next morning had to contend with rain and lightning all around.  I have to say this was by far one of the easiest load-ins we’ve done, since we tow a 40-foot RV and it can get pretty hairy in a city.  The show director was actually glad to have us in so early so we could get out quick, and that we did, and managed to escape setting up in a downpour and instead gorge ourselves on some damn good wings and potato skins.  Yep, pre-show fuel up! 

This year, parking was not free, as it has been in the past, and there is no parking allowed on the park streets.  Or so we were informed in the show packet.  Framer Dude managed to wangle a spot for the Artship Enterprise for $50 for the weekend, and I suppose that comes from experience of working on a submarine in the Navy.  However, other artists/vendors with RV’s were parked along the streets outside the park with no apparent repercussions.  It really irks me when I try to adhere to the parking instructions and others just go ahead and do their own thing-I would have loved to have saved myself fifty bucks and been closer to the show too.  Friday the storms continued, and I was a bit nervous, being in a park with lots of tall trees all around, especially when one bolt audibly crackled directly overhead with a deafening crash.  The storm seemed to just circulate and keep redeveloping over Muskegon all morning, though surprisingly, there were a few people out and about, which is one thing I’ve forgotten about Northerners, we’re a bit more blasé to inclement weather.  Still, I was very glad I decided to pack my Gore-Tex raincoat for this trip North!

The show itself is set up in Hackley Park, a beautiful setting with huge tall (lightning magnet) trees, and it’s a full 3 day show, which I like, since Saturday becomes a mellow day to relax and interact with patrons without the pressure of setting up and tearing down within 48 hours.My booth was perfectly placed in the shade of a maple, so I stayed cool once the skies cleared and temps crawled into the mid 80’s.  Framer Dude walked the show, and was very surprised at both the scarcity of 2D work and the enormous amount of jewelry.  I think I saw two other oil painters in my excursions around.  There was not a lot of high-end art, and I suspect I could have won an award for the highest priced artist there.  A Michigan artist said that this part of Michigan has seen a steep drop in painters at the shows.  Who did well? The henna tattoo artist across from me did. (Tattoo artist at an art show? you’re saying. Yup.) The yard art people did.  The beaders did.  The suspect BS vendors did.  I hit my target, and was happy with my sales and the 3rd place prize money.  The infernally annoying salsa vendor behind me in the street was hawking obnoxiously to all the women passing by and to the credit of the show promoters, he was told to tone down his act or leave.

Saturday and Sunday the weather was great.  The crowds were large and steady on Saturday, and the oh-that’s-gorgeous-but-my-hands-ain’t-leavin-my-pockets folks were in full force.  The artist next to me said this is more a B, B-minus show.  Overall, Framer Dude and I were not impressed with the buying power of this crowd, as the fine art buyers were pretty few and far between, and there is a lot of other entertainment vying for tight dollars between the flea market/craft section, the food section, and the evening music venues. From our five-star parking lot, we got to hear loud and clear Night Ranger on Friday Night, and a Journey tribute band, I think.  I should have busted out my acid-washed jeans and Stiff Stuff to tease my hair out.  Don’t stop belie-e-eving...

Teardown went off without a hitch: we decided to wait for the vendors on the street to clear out before we towed our RV right up to the booth and loaded out, so we went back for more greasy pub food.  (MAC’s has the best potato skins I’ve ever had, as well as a really good seared tuna if you’re not into clogging your arteries.)

Overall, I was pleased by the general crowd reception to my work, as I’ve never been to Michigan before and I’m testing new geographical markets, and I was Okay with my sales, considering the crowd.  Krasl in St. Joseph next weekend has the reputation as the high-end art show in southwest Michigan, and I am still on their waitlist at this moment, ready to hold a small animal sacrifice to the gods of the art shows that I’ll be able to participate in that one.

So far in my summer northeast swing, I've dodged a few meteorological bullets, and this week was no exception.  As was the case at Ocean City MD a few weeks ago, Friday's weather was brutal--about 2 inches of rain fell from Friday afternoon through midnight, but skies began clearing by the time artists arrived to begin setup.  This caused chalk-marking of the booth spaces to be delayed from Friday to early Sat. a.m., but promoter Marcy Boroff (of Renaissance Craftables) communicated this in a Friday-evening email, so there were no big surprises. 

 

It's tough for me to comment on all aspects of this show, so I'm hoping that others will fill in the blanks.  The reason: I applied to this long-running show  after the deadline (but immediately after several artists I had asked, raved about it).  I was initially wait-listed, with the explanation that construction on one of the streets that hosted the show was causing a scramble for additional spaces, and if they became available I'd be offered one.  Two weeks later, they were, and I was in. 

 

Setup, at least for the artists on the "extension", was a breeze.  Our booths were  the sidewalk, facing the buildings, not the street.  So although there was automobile traffic behind our booths all day, it also made streetside parking available, so we could unload and park right behind our booths. And as temperatures rose toward 90 degrees under clear skies, we were happy that tall shade trees and buildings cooled things off.  Folks in the main festival area, set up in the street without benefit of maple trees, were pretty much parboiled by 3 PM. 

The downside was that although the new spaces were along the same road (Kings Highway) as the main show, show goers had to cross a busy intersection to get to us, and there were no "More Art This Way!" type of signs to alert them to our existence.  So our group of 20 or so artists--who called ourselves "The Orphans"--had pretty light traffic on Saturday.

 

The show has unusual hours:  11-7 on Saturday, and noon to 5 on Sunday (although many artists opened as early as 10 AM on Day 2).  As the title of the show implies, this show is geared more toward crafters, and less toward fine artists, And although I saw some really nice work as I strolled about on  Sunday morning, overall the show quality was middle-of-the-road. 

 

On Sunday crowds picked up festival wide, and the good news is, they came prepared to buy.  Most of the folks with whom I spoke come to this show year after year.  One Sunday-night TV report cited a police estimate of 100,000 attendees, though I'll bet that one came from the Chamber of Commerce.  Nonetheless, crowds were definitely heavy; I tripled my sales from the previous day and wound up with sales well into four figures.  Marcy came by to introduce herself on Saturday and good-naturedly chided me to "get my app in on time next year."  Based on good results in the face of the layout challenges, I don't see any reason to book anywhere else.  I'd like to see what I could do on the "main drag" of this popular show.

Promenade of Art: Live

Well, I'm packed and ready to head down toward the Windy City way and my first Promenade of Art in Arlington Heights, Illinois. I'm excited, I can tell you.

 

Altthough this past Tuesday, Mukwonago had such high winds, hail and lighting that it shattered the boys plexiglass basketball hoop(good thing it fell to the right. Dan's antique refurbished 1963 Fury was to the left! Whew.) And it split our largest tree right down the middle......that was the one my oldest tried to saw down when he was a toddler! I thought it had nine lives....guess only two. Willow, my sober Maltese, and I were under the heavy computer desk in the basement. Too many tornadoes that are not in Kansas to suit me!

 

Anyway, if Connie asks, that's were I will be.

And I'll keep you posted.

Course, I'm no Nels....so don't expect a raconteur.

Glendale, Ohio (Cincinnati)

Booth Fee: $40.00

Jury Fee: It is a juried show, but they do not charge a jury fee.

 

This was my third year at the Trillium Art Fair and the third year for the fair itself. Glenwood Gardens is a beautiful park nestled back in a spot where you wouldn't expect it. It is home to many large shade trees, flower gardens and rotating exhibits – this time it is a sculptural exhibit: Big Bugs.

 

The show organizers do a nice job limiting the jewelry category and having a nice mix of other artists. This year there were painters, photographers, metal sculpture artists (with those cute copper garden fixtures!), handcrafted purses and of course jewelry artists, among others. It really is a nice show. There are always volunteers and park employees walking around throughout the day, distributing water and granola bars in the morning at set-up and then checking to see if anyone needs booth sitters for breaks. I usually take advantage of this because I do the majority of my shows solo, so that is a much appreciated perk!

 

I have been fortunate enough to have the same spot every year on the east side of the park and the shade trees in the middle really work to keep my booth fairly cool (even in last year's heat). This year, the temperature was a dreamy 80º and there was plenty of sunshine, which had lots of people out shopping. Generally I find that the majority of people shopping are actually spending too. The park is dog friendly, so there is an endless parade of furry friends all day, which I find fun. They also have a couple bands play throughout the day, which adds to the energy of the fair.

 

Loading and unloading can be a little tricky as you are not allowed to pull up into the exhibit space, which is grass, and there is a chain-link fence around the area. They do open large double gates at one end, so you can unload with the help of volunteers and carts. This year, artists parked down the hill away from the main parking lot and were shuttled back to the exhibit area.

 

Overall, this has been one of my best shows consistently for three years and I really hope to be in it again next June!

Back in the Saddle!

Well guys, sorry I haven't been posting or 'blogging' but alot has happened since my last post. The economy is making a come back but you have to 'evolve' your self and your work. If you have been on the art show circuit for along time, your stuff becomes 'tired' looking and  people that have seen you for 3 -5 years at the same shows start to see it too. Time to relook your work and think of ways to 'update' it. What? Do I hear that is what my work is and I'm not changing a thing? Well, as artists, we evolve every 5 to 7 years wether you want to or not, it just starts to happen in your work. Take a look at your work that you did 5 years ago and look at the stuff your churning out now...do you see the difference? So does the art festival goers.

So go ahead...go play with that idea that has been churning in your head and work it. See what happens....and let me know!

Wells Street -- what happened this year

The Wells Street art festival in Chicago is usually one of my best shows. It is also one of the hardest set-ups we do. Early morning. Crowded streets. Two rows of tents down the center of the street, with food vendors blocking straight through access in the driving lane. Assigned times for artists are supposed to allow everyone at least an hour for load-in and setup before the show officially opens at 10AM on Saturday. In practice, artists find anyway they can to get their equipment in place as early as possible.

I've had a double booth in the same location, near the Spice House and Topo Gigio, for several years. It's a high traffic location, because of O'Briens, The Fireplace Inn and a new club, the Benchmark. The main stage is in the O'Brien's parking lot, and provides a steady beat throughout the entire show.Friday night I didn't leave Michigan until almost 10:30 PM. I had to pick up Karyn in Ann Arbor, and by the time we got to Chicago, it was about 4:00 AM. No sleep for us. I walked down Wells to see where our booth spot was -- new numbers meant that I was moved slightly south. At 4:45, I was able to get my traile and truck down to the booth, about a block and a half in. My load-in time was officially 6:45, but there is no way that I could get the trailer and truck in and out that late. I think that the show has finally realized after 40 years that some artists are always going to need early access to the show. The coordinator told me that the show director had given permission to a few artists to come in early, after a phone call. I've called in previous years and been told that it's impossible.Some artists dolly in from the northern paid lot on Wells, The Carriage Lot. Some dolly from parking spots on North Ave. Some dolly from the side streets, Schiller, Goethe and Scott. Some do bring their vans in. By 10AM, the show does get set up. It's a minor miracle, but we were unloaded, the truck and trailer parked in the paid lot at Franklin School, the double canopy setup and all the art hung, with lights, by 10AM.

Saturday was cold and drizzly. It didn't out and out rain, but it was chilly. It didn't stop the young urban professionals from crowding into the show, and buying art in the morning and early afternoon. But the temps got colder by 4PM, and the crowd slowly changed to a party mood. Lots of beer and lots of strolling. A mix of dogs, strollers, couples and professionals. I sold a few smaller pieces, but nothing large. By 6PM, most of the crowd were there to party, not to buy. My neighbors, Jean-Claude Louis, another photog with a double that looked exactly like mine, and David Bigelow, the well-known printmaker, both closed up by 8PM. Usually we'll stay open, and send some art home with new owners, but the weather put a chill into the sales. We closed up and walked down to our hotel on Clark Street. Along the way, we stopped at Panang, a friendly Thai restaurant on Clark. Good food, efficient service, and inexpensive. Since we hadn't had sleep for almost 42 hours, it didn't take long to catch a few zzz's. Luckily, we waited until we got to the hotel for that.

David Bigelow wins for Works on Paper -- Congrats, and well-deserved!

 

Sunday was bright and blue. The sun was out, and cheered me right up. We stopped at the trailer to restock, and opened the booth up about 10:15. Sunday was better for sales, but still slower than previous years. I saw a couple of previous customers, including Liz Hein, who posed for a shot with her favorite piece, "No Exit". My friend Maureen stopped by. I got to step into the Spice House for some fresh cumin and some Moroccan spices. The show provides a break room in the offices of the Old Town Merchants Association, and serves up coffee, pastry and fruit all day long. The bathroom is clean, too, but you might have to wait a minute for it. We spent a lot of time talking with David Bigelow in between sales. This year's crowd seemed much more intent on partying and being seen than in previous years. My sales reflected this, too. I did about 50% of what I did last year. Enough to pay a few bills, but maybe not enough to reflect the long hours and brutal setup.

I know that some artists did well at Wells this year. Photography was perhaps over-represented. My friend Lisa sent many of her well-designed t-shirts and tanks home with happy owners. Jean-Claude had a better show this year than last year. But all in all, it seemed to me that the energy was directed more towards having a good time than feathering the nest this year. It's an expensive show to do, when you add up all the extras. Electricity costs $150, and puts you in the middle of the show. Parking ranges from $75 to $150 for the weekend, and is definitely worth it if you have a hard-to-park rig like I do. The booth fee is average. Hotels are out-of-sight downtown, and I can't recommend the Howard Johnsons on Wells. Many stay out in the suburbs, at the airport hotels, or out in Schaumburg, which is a lo-n-n-n-n-g hike. 


Load-out is efficient. Artists begin closing at 8PM, but vehicles are not allowed on the street till all the partiers go home, which can be as late as 11PM. Many dolly out the same way they came in. Vans have a definite advantage over trailers here. Some folks rent an Enterprise van or cube truck specifically for this show. We didn't really start breaking down until about 9PM, had a couple big sales at the end to make it all right. The trailer was into the show at about 10:45, and by that time, over 75% of the artists had found a better way out. We were on the road by 11:45. A very long weekend. We can't drive the entire way back to Michigan after this weekend, so another night in a hotel is required. This year, I stopped in St. Joseph, and made the rest of the drive on Monday morning. Exhausted but happy. 

A last word: There is a lot of buy-sell here. Some is blatant, some is not. While the show says that all work must be original, some is clearly not. It doesn't matter. Bring whatever you want. At $7/pop "Suggested Donation", I'd estimate that the show grosses about $1.5 in gate fees alone. It's still fun, still unique, and one of the best parties in Chicago in the summertime.

So You Want to Make Money as an Artist!

Recently I heard from a gal who is planning to set herself up in the self-designed note card business when her full time employment ends within the next year or so. She contacted me for some advice as to how to go about some of the basics. I’ll start by addressing some of her questions.

Marketing Yourself

Q: These are the things I don’t want to deal with but understand it’s all part of marketing yourself. I know that when I get to the point of selling that I want to do it online mainly because that seems to be the most simple way of marketing products.

A: She uses the phrase “marketing yourself” which is an awesome starting point because as we who have been doing this for awhile know – it is all about marketing yourself. There are a zillion super talented artists out there in the world so one of the major tasks of any successful artist is to find a way to get noticed and separate yourself out. This is accomplished using a matrix of available tools not the least of which is building your own tribe of ardent followers.

Hello shows, competitions, fundraisers and social networks; face-time and online versions. As with any new product seeking entry into an overloaded world of buying opportunities what sets your work apart from the rest, what makes it unique and tempting usually has a lot to do with the back story of the product; its promise. Your Mission with it.

Simple? Ummmmm…..

The other word that caught my fancy was “simple”. When done properly and well coordinating your online presence probably couldn’t be characterized as simple. Able to be done in one’s pajamas, yes. Simple, not so much. :)

Set up an Etsy Shop

Q: One area I get stuck on is where to market online, do I open an Etsy account or create my own website

A: Yes! Both. Without question. Esty is a nice interface for creating a safe shopping experience for your potential customers. It’s also hugely popular and thus jammed with page after page of awesome items created by others! But no matter who you are or what you’re selling you can’t count on your Etsy store doing all the work for you.

I market several of my creative existences via that store – and quite frankly wasn’t entirely sure where Etsy was headed when it first came to my attention several years ago. I didn’t want to devalue my work if that’s where it was headed – much like I think eBay did to artists early on. Songpony was a pseudonym – I got HappyArtStudio later on – my dog is using it currently.)

Your Own Site

But Esty isn’t your only solution – you need to design a beautiful website where you can:

  • tell your story,
  • add layers to the experience of buying your work for your customers and
  • personally connect with them.

On your own site you can control how your customers view your work and interact with you. There are so many options for creating gorgeous fully integrated experiences these days – I won’t get into them all here. I will say I use a self hosted site with WordPress and a ton of widgets installed to integrate my multiple online HappyArt presences with each other.

Here I can show people my new work, give them access to some of my archived things as well as create a sense of depth to the commitment I’ve made to my art through my lists of accomplishments, shows and upcoming plans.

Why blog?

To keep your information freshly updated for practical human and search engine reasons. Be real, timely and entertaining or informative when you can. Again we’re talking about creating legitimacy for your message and mission with your work.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Beyond

facebook-logo-300x112.jpgFacebook has become the king of all the social networking sites for artists (and just about everyone else) to connect with their tribe. I only just started using it for my re-entry back into the art career so I’m still in the beginning stage of gaining followers for my HappyArt Facebook page. Set up a page for yourself right away. Do not use your personal presence for your business.You want to keep your personal self sacrosanct and part from your professional self. Keeps your messaging better targeted and clear for your customers.

My Merry Horses account is a whole other story!marryhorses-300x276.jpg She’s been at the Facebook thing for about a year and a half and has over 5000+ followers now. These are people who pay attention when this persona of mine mentions things. It is among my goals for HappyArt to eventually create a similar following.

Twitter is a bit wanky. It’s a great tool for keeping some buzz going – but you have to keep up with it and know that what your tweet slides down the feeds fairly quickly. There’s all sorts of interesting articles available about how best to use your Twitter account. Again it’s all about relationship creation, building and maintenance. Do avoid overtweeting your sales pitches. Big turn off. Instead Tweet about the behind the scenes entertaining aspects of your work, your travels and other relevant content that helps build your work as a brand.

youtube.jpgYouTube is a great place to build depth to your process or inspiration to embed into your blog. Also if you’re a natural born teacher with something to teach you can set yourself up as the go-to expert on your particular subject via this fabulous medium. Lots of artists have which has turned into new ways to monetize their creativity!

Pricing and Marketing Logistics

Q; The other thing I get stuck on is how much to charge for my notecards and if I sell one card or a group of cards?

A: This is a biggie. Let’s break it down.

How Much to Charge

Ah, the age-old question. Materials + Time + Related Expenses (marketing time, packaging time, shopping and shipping, time to get materials in, professional services, taxes, etc etc etc) + profit. It’s as easy and as tricky as that. Oh and don’t forget to research what the typical price range is for what you’re selling! You don’t want to go too much over what people typically pay for something like yours – nor do you want to under price your work. Do your research! And do be sure to compare apples to apples. If your note cards are giclee printed on acid-free recycled paper with earth-friendly soy inks – you can definitely get away with charging more. AND you’ve identified some very marketable selling points for your work!

You can work your equation backwards or forwards depending on your expectations for this new career. If you intend to clear $50,000 annually you have a number you can work backwards from as to how to identify how many sales that needs to be. If you’re clearing $1 a card that’s 50,000 cards or an average of 136 a day. You get the idea.

So now she gets to decide how she wants to package them! As a group you probably want to put them in some sort of attractive display. These can be had – but they’re not free. Depending on how many you buy at once a note card display box can add as much as a dollar or more to your expenses. Again work your numbers – see what makes sense!

Building Your Tribe

artfairinsiders-300x57.jpgMaking money as a professional self-employed entrepreneur artist is a lot about being a successful small business person in addition to harnessing your creative excellence. To do so consistently is more about perseverance than it is about luck. You need to make your work known, make it available and stand behind it every step of the way. You have to be fearless, you’re working without a net. You have to make it accessible and available! Sometimes this means taking it to the streets. With this in mind street fairs are a wonderful way to spread the word about what you’re doing! Art Fair Insiders is an awesome network that connects artists with opportunities in this realm. Join! It’s free too. Friend me there as well.

Look for competitions – enter and when you win announce it! Again, it’s another way to build buzz for your ‘brand’ and add to your list of accomplishments – something customers love hearing about. Makes you all look smart with impeccable taste!

You will absolutely delighted to discover how nice and helpful other artists are. It is the one thing you can always rely on in this otherwise very challenging business. These are Your People. They are on your side.

Shows

Selling at outdoor or other venues with other artisans or at farmer’s markets, fundraisers, etc, requires a lot of thought and pre-planning. Just as an intro to what this entails you’ll need:

  • a tent
  • tent anchors (for wind)
  • displays for your note cards
  • will you accept credit cards? You’ll need to set that up
  • receipts
  • inventory (you have to know what will sell and bring a lot of it!)
  • business cards, etc etc

There’s a whole lot of planning that goes into creating an acceptable and attractive booth for a show. If you intend to try for juried shows – then you need to look at a whole other set of accoutrements too – not the least of which would be the original art presented to the jury in gorgeous photos along with your jury fees etc. Farmer’s markets work for some people – especially if your subject mater can be related to that crowd and your price point is snappy.

A Whole Different Approach

If all of that seems overwhelming – luckily for you there’s a whole different way you can generate some income with awesome cool designs. Hello Zazzle and CafePress! On sites like these you can upload your designs and offer them for sale with a small mark up that goes into your own pocket. They’ll produce things like t-shirts, calenders, mugs and note cards, as well as a bevy of other temptations.

The Wrap Up

So creating a successful business for your art is a challenging but hugely rewarding line of work. For me having to wear so many hats to maintain relevance is actually one of the bonuses. It is hard to get bored! It’s risky, exhausting and very very challenging – which is why successes are so dang sweet!

First let me say that I was impressed with what Kansas City has done with the Power & Light District, the downtown area where the show was held. It appears that the city has invested a considerable amount of resources to make “The District” a vibrant place. I have never been to KC prior to this trip so I have no idea what the area was like before, but now it seems like a happening, downtown area. Good job, KC.

 

Friday setup was in the rain the entire time, a drenching, steady rain. Fortunately by the time I was done with setup and got back to the RV to change into something dry the rain had stopped, the sun was making occasional appearances, and the streets were drying out. Reason enough to be optimistic since my show the previous weekend was a total bust. See other’s reviews of Art Birmingham.

 

The Downtown Art Annual is on fairly narrow city streets so setup/teardown can be a bit tight, but everyone worked pretty well together. The show is a three day affair with setup starting at 11:00 am Friday and the show running from 5-9 pm that night. By 9:00 pm it is pretty dark and lights are needed for your work to have any hope of being seen. There is power available but there is a catch. The city light poles have electrical outlets which we were allowed to plug in to, if we had a way to reach them, they are about 25 feet above the sidewalk. Needless to say nobody took advantage of the “available” power.

 

Sales, at least for me, were less than expected, I covered expenses plus a little. I am a black & white photographer and had a lot of interest in my work but couldn’t get enough people to pull the trigger. However, the mixed media artist next door did quite well. Saturday was the busiest day with a good sized crowd that seemed genuinely interested in looking at the art and talking with the artists, as opposed to just strolling through the zoo, looking at the animals in their cages, and eating a corn dog. For the most part I found the customers to be considerate, appreciative, and fairly sophisticated. Never once was I asked to give a discount, all of my sales were at full price. How often does that happen? Friday evenings crowd seemed to be the younger, hipper, KC downtown residents and if your art appealed to their tastes, good sales could be had. Sunday was the slowest day with light crowds and equally light sales.

 

As has been my experience at most shows that feature music, it was way too loud! During most of Saturday communicating with customers was difficult. I enjoyed the music, it was a nice blend of blues and jazz with a touch of rock n roll, but I wasn’t there for the music. Sunday’s music was a welcome relief. While still being a blend of jazz & blues, the volume was several decibels lower. Horace Washington & Friends, the first of two musical groups on Sunday were quite fun and entertaining from noonuntil 2:00 pm and continually urged the crowd to “buy art”. I spoke with him afterwards and expressed my thanks for his encouraging the folks to buy art and he said, “Unlike you folks (the artists) we get paid no matter what. You are the reason everyone is here, we are here to support you”. How refreshing!

 

There was no food court. This was a Howard Allen show, a first for me, and from my understanding HA shows do not have food courts. FYI.

 

As a side note, I have experienced just about every kind of weather in my years of doing shows except a tornado. I am from the Northwest and the T-word strikes paralyzing fear in me. I can deal with earthquakes, wildfires, rain, wind, snow, ice, but please, no tornadoes. Turns out that the tornado that destroyed Joplin, MO happened on the Sunday of this show and was only 150 miles away. Way too close for my comfort. My thoughts and condolences go out to the folks who were affected by this devastating storm. Makes my less than expected sales pretty insignificant.

When I applied for this show, I was looking for something close to the OKC 6-day show.  The Book & Art fair is held every year on Mother's Day weekend at the Century II exhibit hall in Wichita, Kansas as a fundraiser for the local art museum.  As the date of the show approached, my husband and I were faced with a couple of very unexpected and expensive events that had me questioning whether or not to do this one.  He talked me into going, but I chose to drive and set-up on the same day to keep my hotel costs down, something that I don't normally do.

 

Set-Up

Set-up is on Friday from 10 am 'til 8pm.  I arrived at 5pm and found easy parking at the loading dock.  I was able to unload quickly onto one of the provided flatbed carts and dolly my stuff to my booth space.  Set-up seemed to go smoothly for most people. Affordable electric ($35) was provided via an outlet on the floor right at your booth space, the floor was fairly level, and the aisles were wide.  I managed to finish setting up at 7:45, a respectable time when I'm by myself.

 

The artist's parking was an easy one block walk from Century II.  Because of my late arrival I didn't need to move my car to the artist's parking lot on Friday, just move it from the the dock space to another "loading" space.   Saturady and Sunday that short walk was much appreciated in the 100 degree heat.

 

The Show

The show opened Saturday morning at 10am, and there was a line of shoppers at the door.  Some of these folks went straight for the booths, others went right upstairs for the used book sale.  By 2pm the crowd had thinned out to a mere trickle and pretty much remained that way until the 6pm closing time.  Bargain shoppers abounded in the afternoon crowd, drwan in by the book sale.  The artists had plenty of time to walk around and visit in the afternoon.  I met many first-timers like myself, and one long-timer.  Several of the artists had been in OKC like myself.  All of the first-timers expressed that it would be nice to just make the booth fee for this one($200).

 

Sunday brought an 11am start time, and shoppers were once again lined up at the door.  Most folks managed to make early sales, but by 2 o'clock the crowd had shifted again.  The recycle metal worker across from me managed to keep the sales up for another hour or so, but most of the buying energy was gone.  At 3pm, an announcement was mad that all of the used books were on sale for $3 per paper grocery bag full, and that sucked some of the shoppers up to the balcony to look for bargains.  Several of the artists started a slow tear-down at 4:30 in preparation for the 5pm show close.  Those I spoke to didn't have great sales on either day and were gald when the show was over. 

 

Load Out

In anticipation of the forthcoming chaos of folks trying to leave a not-so-great show in a hurry, I brought in my own handtruck and packing materials when I arrived Sunday morning.  The flatbed carts provided by the site were in short supply at teardown and I was gald to have a place to stack my ProPanels off of the floor.  Everything was orderly and quick, and the hall was fairly empty when I departed at 6:30.

 

My Review

For some reason this show was very heavy on photography and jewelry.  The jewelry I get - Mother's Day and shiny, 3-D things to touch.  But photo?  I'm a photographer and this was totally not my crowd.  My stuff is higher-end, monochromatic, historic process work and this was a lower-end, 3-D, bargain-hunting crowd.  Unfortunately this show doesn't really have a website, and you're only given a list of participating artists at check-in (without a notation of medium), so reasearch can't be done prior to application or acceptance to see if your work is a good fit.  My hopes were that being sponsored by the local art museum the quality might be a little higher.

In terms of sales, under $100 seemed to be the hot price point.  A nearby jeweler sold a piece well above that mark but had give a significant discount just to make the sale.  In terms of 2-D, the hot item seemed to be the "print-in-a-bag" - no mat, just a flat print dropped in a clearbag.  Even notecards were a hard sell at this show.

In the past this show was held in conjunction with RiverFest (now held in June), which apparently brought in bigger crowds on Saturday.  This was the first year the the Book and Art show was on its own and despite a good advertising campaign the shoppers just weren't there.  And this is first and foremost a used book sale.  The art fair feels like a sideline - a few boothsitters, cookies at check-in, but that's it.  Everyone was very nice, but that doesn't put gas in the car to get you home.  If you live close by and need a filler show, this could be OK if you have lots of stuff in the $30 - $50 range.

So sad...I had my 1st show in 8 years, Barrington IL Art Festival by Amdur Productions. Very organized, easy setting, tons of parking. Show was right in the middle of town, coffee and cupcake shops, adorable gift stores and boutiques set in old style homes,tons of local independent business, banks and investment companies, the town is charming, beautiful amazing houses, mansions with horses.

Saturday was chilly and  light rain couple times. People browsing, I didn't have a good day but too early to judge. 

Sunday was starting to be crowded, people finally coming inside my booth,tons of families excited to be out for Memorial Day, they were asking questions, leaving their e mails, I was 11:00 am,starting to feel excited when they notified us to secure our tent because a storm was coming. End of the story...storm came, hitting hard, I got in my car and went to Mc Donald's drive through to kill some time, then I came back to check my EZ UP, EASY DOWN tent. I'm glad I did. Water on the roof was just about to cause a disaster. Other artists helped me to on do my tent so the water just came down like a waterfall. Amdur team told us that storm was coming heavier so just go ahead and pick up, we wouldn't be penalized.

There's always good things in bad things, all I can say is that I am glad I met wonderful artists and they helped me to take all my tent and displays down in minutes and load my car, everybody soaking wet and they didn't care, they were all helping other artists. I'm looking forward to see them in other shows that we will be doing this season, we will stay connected :). It's 1pm and I'm already home blogging, geez! Thank you weather!

Please, tell me not to get disappointed and all sows are not like this!

I  am so excited because after a month of work I finally finished painting my Chicago White Sox frog sculpture. This sculpture will be at IN BLOOM garden art exhibit from May 19 to September at Oakbrook mall in Oakbrook IL. There will also be a Chicago Bulls, Blackhawks all these autographed by players. There would also be about 60 other different sculptures painted by amazing artists with different themes. Hope you can stop by and visit this beautiful exhibit. After Expo report! Home at last...

April 5...Somewhere on I-10 in Texas

When you begin describing a life-changing experience, it is difficult to put it into words that don’t sound trite or hackneyed.

During the initial rush to start tearing down at 6:30 on Sunday, it was easy to keep focused on the task at hand and not dwell on the fact that we had formed close friendships and would be saying goodbye.  But Monday morning, as I walked through the tent for a final check, I was bawling like a calf.  After three months of living, working, sharing, and playing with other artists, you become really close. These are the people that I want to be around: a genuine, creative, caring, sharing community.  I have never been a part of one like this; the closest thing was college, but that wasn’t the same.  Here, as adults who are pursuing their dreams and fulfilling who they want to be, there was little animosity or jealousy.  Framer Dude and I were accepted and embraced, and he became an integral part of this family- something he didn’t expect.  As the one left-brained, pragmatic, problem solver amidst a sea of right-brained artists, he became the go-to guy for anything and everything.  From manning the grill and cafe, to building frames and easels, to helping set up and tear down weekend shows, to trouble shooting RV and auto difficulties, there was perhaps four days out of seventy that he had nothing to do.  I have to admit, in January, I was worried that he’d be bored silly in the middle of the desert.  But now, he’s anticipating coming back next year to our new friends.  The drive just sucks.


I think you get back what you put into life, once you find where you’re supposed to be and what you’re supposed to do.  I explored creative avenues and pulled off several new paintings, tried new approaches that didn’t work, and learned about focusing (not easy with ADHD). We have preconceived notions of whom we become friends with. Though we come from all over the country from all walks of life, we found common ground with each other and shared the joys of selling and the hard times; we shared knowledge, critiques, trust, aggravations, poker games, recipes, meals, and happy hours.  My daily walking partner, Shalah, a sculptor of magnificent spiritual pieces and her sister Karen, are ranchers from Colorado whose down-to-earth frankness is similar to my own New York attitude, without my accent (which always tickled Travis from Utah). I found an adopted mother and father in Jeanne and Travis, and an older sister in Cynthia that I love to shop with. Fountain Steve, our RV neighbor, missed his family up in Oregon terribly, and found a place with us many nights.  Kaleidoscope Steve and Framer Dude became buddies and were constantly trading wit.  Marlon and Terri somehow encouraged anti-religion Framer Dude to go to church with them.   They’re going to have their work cut out for themselves next year.

I know this is also supposed to report on the economics of the show as well.  Judy, Judi and Dennis do an amazing job promoting the Expo, no easy task when there’s already one other ten-week show going on at the same time (Celebration) and which has a prime location right off the 101.  But the patrons who came always remarked on the atmosphere at Expo- welcoming and approachable.  Some artists did exceptionally well; some did not. The economy is still being felt in Arizona, but Scottsdale and the surrounding neighborhoods of Carefree and Cave Creek are second- and third-home communities.  Canadians make up a large part of the art-buying, and Canada’s economy is still strong. 


But the rewards went far beyond financial.  I learned how full time artists work, since that’s something I’ve never experienced neither here in my isolated little part of the world nor, for that matter, anywhere else.   Art tends to be an isolated venture, and it’s up to each artist to find solidarity among other artists, if they need that.  I was brought up in a family that treated art as something that (fill in the adjective here) people did and was not taken seriously as a career.  This trip to Arizona showed me professional, responsible artists that make it work.  It is possible to have a career as an artist, and it’s a lot of work.  But I’ve worked hard at other jobs that I didn’t like, so why waste my time on that?  When I do my marketing, networking, creating, it doesn’t feel like work.  It feels like what I’m supposed to do, and I’m glad I’m here to report on that and share with all of you.  I will have the silly pictures coming soon, since we not only work hard, we play hard too!!

 When I look at other peoples work, it feels as if everyone has narrowed thing down and their work covers a small part of the spectrum of art.  It feels clean and focused.  

 

When I look at my work, I feel that it has many different styles and levels.  I have cheeper wearable things, expensive one of a kind things, and artwork.  In those categories, I feel like my work covers a wide range as well. From texture to humor.  I kind of like not doing the same thing all the time, I also like to show to people that I can do a wide range of things (I do custom work).  I also still want to explore and not feel penned into one thing only.  I'm also a younger artist, I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

 

I would like to know if people feel it is important to be a bit focused in your work that you display, or if a range of things is ok.  I'd love it if people could tell me if my work is scatted or if there is a focus that I don't see (website www.caz-designs.com), but I do understand that people are busy.  Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated!

Elk Rapids is at the center of some of the most affluent real estate in northern Michigan, on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay, near Charlevoix and Harbor Springs.  This area has really blossomed with new homes, golf courses and galleries in the last ten years, making it a desired vacation second home location, for people from Chicago and Detroit.
 
The art fair is held in Veteran's Memorial Park, by Grand Traverse Bay in the heart of this charming harbor town.  Patrons can walk two short blocks where they will find restaurants, antique shops and art galleries.  Elk Rapids already attracts an art-loving clientele the year around.
 
The organizers have planned every detail including a reception (appetizers and wine) the night before for the artists and volunteers.  The next morning volunteers are on hand with golf carts at 5am to unload artists vans and help with setup.  Then the sun comes out and the people show up.  As they know this is a one-day show so it is "now or never."

Same brush.  A #7 red sable filbert.  We both worked out tails off.  For those of you who have been wondering what in tarnation happened to me, I promise there will be full reports coming.  Once I park my watongus in the sand of Pensacola's Gulf beaches next week and have two margaritas in hand, I will have the full Expo digest.  But, in short, it has been the most productive three months of my young career as a full-time artist, I've met fellow artists who have become good friends, and I will be bawling my eyes out when I leave.
