First show ever

I haven't participated in my first show yet, but it's scheduled for the end of June!! Ocean Beach Chili Cook-Off! I thought I'd join up here and get wise first. Haha!

What are the best things about art fairs

I think the kinds of people that go to art fairs are more apt to purchase quirky, artistic niche items than other folk... They are more apt to be independent. And there's something about the character of those people that makes them unique, interesting, and endearing.

Best show ever and why

Someday, I'll let you know! But I have to say that the best Art Fair I've ever been to as an attendee was the Carlsbad Street Festival in April of 2011. Very eclectic crowd, and a beautiful day!

Worst show ever and why

I must say that personally, I am finding ArtWalk in San Diego to be less and less appealing... It has become, frankly, an excuse for corporations to "feel good about supporting the arts" but is getting to be less and less about art all the time... It's emphasis has shifted from an artist-based event to a corporate sponsorship write-off shell, and sadly it shows...

  • Congrats Coerey on winning the Blog Post of the Week Award - 9/24/12.
  • Congratulations on your costuming professorship.  Your clothing is so beautiful, I can only imagine how much fun your costumes are.

    Best of luck to you.

  • Corey, just wondering where you are?  Have you been gobbled up by some art show?

  •  Corey,

I haven't had Cable tv ,or satellite, since 1995. And I DO NOT MISS IT! As a newly divorced single Mom, I had a choice- feed and house the child and myself, or have entertainment. No choice really.

Now, in 2012,  it IS a choice. In looking back, I don't miss TV at all! I perfected my Craft, started my business, raised my child, got married.. I got on with LIFE.

My child grew up with values. TV was not her constant companion or babysitter. BOOKS were.  She was not constantly bombarded with "you NEED to have this" commercialism, or the ever insidious couch potato syndrome.

I have a 20 year old daughter who has matured into a functioning, smart, independent member of society. She graduated earlier than her class, got out on her own, works Full time, saves her money, and is returning to school in the fall for Medical Assistant. No drug or alcohol addictions, no police record, no teen promiscuity or pregnancy. We talked, played board games, read books, interacted with each other.

In 2004, I re-married a wonderful man. He's a musician and Gamer- geek. My guitar man. Plays various instruments, including piano. Our home is filled with guitars and instruments, recording equipment, every game system on the market- a big screen TV- BUT NO CABLE or satellite dish..

We still play board games, video games, go to the movies, READ books, talk, walk, do things together. The idiot box has a definite back seat in this home.

We are computer literate, modern people who made a choice. We chose to keep our brains active, save our hard earned dollars for the better things in life, and I think our lives are much richer for it.

    It is worth it.

You will have so much time for perfecting your Art, growing your business, and in general, be much healthier, both mentally and physically. And much more alert mentally! I commend you!

  • Happy birthday, Corey. I hope this is a great day for you full of fun and friends and that the upcoming year makes some of your dreams come true. Thanks for joining us here.
  • Congrats on the Blog Post of the Week award. It was very interesting.
  • Please do stop by when you're at the artwalk. I hope my display doesn't disappoint and end up to rickitty-rack, but I've been talked into doing it anyway:) Hopefully with the time I have until August I will come up with something at least neutral vs. distasteful (partly kidding). There is no way that I can afford pro-panels or new mesh etc.

Glad you're on here too. I'm sure we'll be able to exchange a lot of ideas. I'll also keep you in mind when I come across venues that may be up your alley. I know you mentioned on your profile that you liked the Carlsbad Street Fair and I could really see something like you are describing there.

If you have a chance, shoot a few pics along. I'd love to see what you are creating. Given that it sounds so different, you probably have a niche going on. People really enjoy unique creations, especially these days. Have you tried selling anything on Etsy yet? It's quite hard to get noticed there. I've been on for less than I month and it's really become a sad obsession. It's driving my husband crazy, and I've yet to sell a thing. I'm hoping that once I add prints instead of originals, along with some jewelry of my art that it will pick up.

I've met some nice people on Etsy that will spend time giving tips etc. On some teams there, but they don't get visited as much. Usually I run across someone that I convo and they are really nice about answering questions.

Someone mentioned something like the Bizarre Bizarre. I'll have to check the spelling again. Apparently it some sort of traveling art show. I'll let you know more after I look into that.

  • Hi Corey,

Nice to meet you and to know a local here. Connie said there aren't many people from California on this site yet. We can pass along local info we learn. Have you decided on an event yet? I'm not very far along - just decided to do the Leucadia ArtWalk in August, but all I have are the paintings and the easy up.
