While traveling out of state

Coming back to Denver from a convention in Utah, was pulled over by the Utah state patrol.  "to check my tinted windows".  Looked in the mirror and there were THREE cruisers parked behind me.  Seems my

Colorado license plates had attracted their attention.  Looking for pot smugglers no doubt.  You can bet

I will be keeping my paperwork handy on my out of state trips this season.  Along with license, registration and proof of insurance, I'll be bringing my letters/contracts from the events I'm traveling to.  Also my promotional brochures and cards.

That way I will have some evidence to show the cops when they pull me over.

Safe travels,

  • Well, I'm back in Denver.  No problems.  Gig went very well, The Rainbow ZEEbra Bubble Tower and Stilt Party was very well received. HOT, hit 90+ degrees. The police were too busy with everyone else to bother me.  North of Las Vegas, close to the BLM lands, SIX, followed by FOUR more cruisers passed me in the construction zone.  Hundreds of us crawling bumper to bumper through the 26 mile long constructions zone, and the cops drove on the shoulders to get past us.  Next, Beaver OK for the Cow Chip Throwing festival.  Will be bringing our COW Bubble Tower for that one.  Should be fun.

  • Yep, Colorado plates here as well.

Thanks for the heads up. I got pulled over recently for a headlight problem (no ticket, just a friendly "did you know?") and it's very stressful, even when you don't think you've done anything wrong.

  • Thanks for the heads-up, Bill.  I travel with Colorado plates and now know to be aware of this issue.  I'll be traveling to Washington State for the Bellevue Arts Museum ArtFair in July so won't be watched after I'm there of course, but may be checked on in all states in-between our two pot-legal states.

  • A lawsuit has been filed in ID by Colorado resident claiming he was profiled for having CO plates were marijuana has been legalized.
  • I was stopped one time in Mississippi coming back from a family reunion. It was still in the same county where the reunion was held, but with a northern Indiana plate I figured I was in deep doo-doo. This was back in the mid 70s. I showed the registration, license, and insurance card, and it was looking grim. The trooper looks at the license again, and asks if I was any kin to a Bobby Wallis. I tell him that's my first cousin, and I didn't say it but the cousin was a constable in the county. He then asks if I was "Robert Earl's boy". I didn't know this guy from squat, and my dad had passed away about 25 years earlier and this guy wasn't old enough to have known him. Anyhow the connections were enough to remove me from being a yankee, and he sent me on my way and cautioned me to be careful out there.

I got nailed one time driving up I-65 when I worked at Purdue University. I came up over a hill south of Lafayette, and a speed trap was set up with one trooper motioning cars to pull over on the berm in a long line. I'm the last one in line, and it was a long wait before they finally got to me. The trooper asked me what I was doing, and I said I was motioned over. He said, 'No we didn't. Do you have a guilty conscious?" The guy laughed and said to get out of there. Cop humor; they figured the almost hour wait was enough punishment and used the fairy godmother "get out of jail" wand. He knew I was speeding and so did I, as I was probably doing 85 over the hill.

  • Put that in the file with "cargo vans travelling into FL and MI"

  • Great info, Bill, especially for artists traveling in closed vehicles with Colorado plates! Thanks for the alert.
