From Americans for the Arts: January 28 the U.S. House of Representatives passed their version of the Economic Recovery Package by a vote of 244 to 188 which successfully included $50 million in supplemental grants funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)! This provision was threatened throughout the House process by opponents of the NEA who questioned its effectiveness in providing economic stimulus. Today, the NEA offered the following statement, “the arts and culture industry is a sector of the economy just like any other with workers who pay taxes, mortgages, rent and contribute in other ways to the economy; and that the National Endowment for the Arts is uniquely positioned to assist in job stimulation for that industry.” Thanks to the thousands of advocates who contacted their Members of Congress and let them know the importance of maintaining funding for the NEA! However, our work is not finished yet as the U.S. Senate starts their debate on the bill tomorrow and continues through next week. The Senate Appropriations Committee did not include an arts jobs funding provision in their version of the bill, but advocates still have an opportunity to change the final outcome. Please take two minutes to take action and ask your Member of Congress and Senators to support the arts in this legislation. Americans for the Arts has supplied you with fresh research and key quotes that support this funding -- your help in communicating this information to your Member of Congress is critical. Please help us continue this important work by becoming an official member of the Arts Action Fund. Play your part by joining the Arts Action Fund today -- it's free and simple.

Errata--in January I reported that the Central West End Art Fair and Taste in St. Louis, MO, had been cancelled. After speaking with this year's Executive Director, Laura Lock, she confirmed that the 2009 15th annual event has NOT been cancelled. Put it back on your calendar, artists! This cool local event that features art, performance and great food is alive and well and will be on the streets of the Central West End neighborhood June 11-14. For more info: www.thecwe.com. My apologies to this hard-working group for this error.

Testimonials

12365432083?profile=RESIZE_400x"Lots of customers and they came to buy! Very well organized and great communication by Webster Arts organization. Volunteers were terrific! Easy load in and load out."

"I can not believe how many people were there to help us out from setting up tents, bringing water and snacks, and checking on us to see if we needed a booth sitter. And then the basic set up of the fair was so nice - the isles were wide, signs made it easy to see how it was laid out, having food trucks with plenty of tables under a canopy, and various musicians to entertain the crowd (the music wasn't too loud either!). I can't believe how many people said this was their favorite fair - especially this year. They said that the variety and quality of artwork available this year was amazing.

Everyone was so nice - I am glad I was part of it."

Presented by Tall Grass Arts Association
Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm
80 Artists
Deadline: May 8

Application fee: $35   Booth fee: $175

The Park Forest Art Fair is the second oldest, continuously juried fine art fair in the Chicagoland region. This fall, ArtFairCalendar.com conducted its 9th annual "Best Art Fair in America" survey and the Park Forest Art Fair was voted one of the Top 5 Small Town Art Fairs in the country.
Park Forest booth
The fair features 80+ artists exhibiting in a range of media from painting, pastels, print-making and photography to glass, ceramics, fiber, jewelry and wood. Several of the artists have exhibited continuously for nearly four decades. Other, newer artists, are returning from as far away as Florida and California. A long-standing tradition at the Park Forest art fair, one that is loved by all of the artists, is that fair-attendees stop and chat with the artists.

Testimonials:
  • "I had the pleasure to be an artist at the Park Forest Art Fair put on Park Forest boothby the wonderful volunteers of the Tall Grass Arts Association. This show was an artist's dream - the volunteers take such good care of the artists from making sure we had water all day long and booth sitters for bathroom breaks. On top of that, we had bagels, juice, coffee and yogurt both mornings and to top it off the volunteers put on a wonderful dinner Saturday night. But I have to say the thing that impressed me the most is this show runs like a well-oiled machine and it's all done with volunteers and donations, not some big promoter. In closing I have to give this art fair an A+ and I would recommend it to anyone that likes being treated like a guest. I also have to thank the people from Park Forest and surrounding areas for coming out to see the show." Janet Hubbard, Oak Creek, WI

  • "Thank you for your many many many efforts. It really is a wonderful show. I've done plenty of shows in the city and affluent north suburbs but none of them can compare to the ease, loyalty and support that the Park Forest Art Fair offers. I have always said it feels like coming home." Jennifer Meyer, Lansing, IL

  • "We were so happy with our sales this year, we were practically giddy! Having a great show at Park Forest really made our summer!! Thank you for all you do!" The Pottery Boys, Blue Island, IL
There is a music fest on Saturday hosted by the village of Park ForestPark Forest art. It features musical groups such as the Neal Alger Quartet and the Raices Latin Jazz Quartet featuring Latin Grammy nominated percussionist Ruben Alvarez. On Sunday, fest favorites, the folk music duo Patchouli, will perform.

Along the sidewalk in front of the Tall Grass Gallery, the "Kids Art Alley" includes many art activities for young children such as the traditional art contest, castle building, face painting and photograms.
A food court offers many selections from hot dogs, barbeque and Nachos to pound cakes.

The Tall Grass Arts Association Gallery will be open during the fair and will be featuring the Annual Gallery Artists' Exhibit. The gallery and art fair are open to the public, free of charge.

Western Wisconsin shows

I'm thinking of doing some filler shows between 2 good shows.  Has anyone ever done Art Fair on Courthouse Square in Rhinelander, WI and Park Art Fair in New Richmond, WI.  These shows have been around a long time.

Website and other things

Well, I finally have the website up and running. Now just need to get lots of "stuff" to put on it both for sale and for looking at and hopefuly, it will generate business. The website is drakesneststudios.com. I'm still learning the ins and outs of it so be patient. Any and all suggestions will be welcomed. I do know that I have to go in and remove the pictures, make them smaller and figure out out to do thumnails, which I think would even be nicer so that you can see a lot and enlarge when you wish.

Did my bit, such as it is, to help celebrate the birthday of our wonderful site by becoming a contributor. With all the talent, the show listings, the help, the mentors, the teachers and the fun, I can't think of a more worth-while cause.

Be back later with more "stuff" as I get it together. Spent all day Monday painting my studio to the point that on Tuesday, I could barely more . Hopefully, I'll be getting paneling to put up on the wall so I can get the wood flooring and carpeting down and then the cabinets up and then I'll be ready to move everything in! Wheeeeeeeeeee!!!! Will post pictures when have the debree neatened up a little. ~2~

This is a different type of art, performing arts, but thought I'd mention it. I am doing a stage production at Alpena Civic Theatre in Alpena, Michigan that is being put on like an old radio show. It is a tribute, of sorts, to the wonderful days of radio mystery theatre. There will be acts with Ellery Queen and Periot, just to name a few. Should be fun - no make up, no costumes, no lines to memorize, just sound effects, reading in character and lots and lots of fun!

More later - Terri at the Drake's Nest in beautiful Ossineke, Michigan

Website and studio update

I think I found most of the bugs on the website and have those fixed, a few still need ironing out. I have also started a blog which will show things in progress, such as fiber art, photographs, what I'm up to, where I'll be, studio updates, etc. That leaves the website for doing business and special event items.

I'd appreciate a little input/thoughts on what you wonderful people think and any suggestions. Please keep in mind that I have not put anything in for purchase as yet as I'm still working out pricing and how to do Pay Pal, for example. My website is: www.drakesneststudios.com and the blog is www.drakesneststudios.wordpress.com. Let me know if you have any problems accessing either site so that I can get those bugs worked out as well.

Thanks a million ladies and gentlemen, your comments, suggestions and encouragement are appreciated more than you know.

Terri at the Drake's Nest where rain is raising my pond level and lowering my driveway level!

Very Easy for people who have a rough time while on the road..Google 411 Just leave it up to Google to come up with something like this!!! Here's a number worth putting in your cell phone, or your home phone speed dial: 1-800-goog411. This is an awesome service from Google, and it's free -- great when you are on the road. Don't waste your money on information calls and don't waste your time manually dialing the number. I am driving along in my car and I need to call tonight’s hotel and I don't know the number. I hit the speed dial for information that I have programmed. The voice at the other end says, "City & State." I say, " Miami, FL." He says, "Business Name or Type of Service." I say, Hampton Inn." He says, "Connecting" and Hampton Inn answers the phone. How great is that? This is nationwide and it is absolutely free! Click on the link below and watch the short clip for a quick demonstration. http://www.google.com/goog411/ Many thanks to my good friend, Barb Burkhardt, for this cool tip.
