Press Release from Juried Art Services

Here is the latest news from Juried Art Services' President Paul Fisher: On January 12th Juried Art Services experienced a server crash. All systems have been restored but some data was lost. We have taken the necessary actions to prevent this kind of occurrence in the future. In greater detail, here's what happened: We had been replicating data to a second hard drive to provide both backup and disaster recovery abilities. The data loss occurred when the data on the first drive became corrupted, and due to a hardware failure, this condition was then replicated to the second drive. We immediately had the servers couriered to one of the nations leading data recovery firms (used by Dunn & Bradstreet and NASA.) They were unsuccessful and all data entered after Dec 24th was lost. Because this was a hardware failure, not a system crash, all software and functions remained fully intact. We have now brought a new server system online to ensure future security. We have switched hosting companies, upgraded our services, added load balancing services to address both traffic fluctuations and hardware failures and now have an offsite backup server in place. Applications, new accounts and images uploaded between December 24th and January 12th had to be re-created. All applicants who had paid their applications were notified quickly by JAS and/or the respective shows to alert them to check if their application was affected and information had to be re-entered. After going "off air" on January 12th the site was back up on the 17th with a prominent notice on the home page of our web site explaining what happened and what action needed to be taken. We then took three days to re-check and thoroughly de-bug the system and on January 20th notified everybody in our system and placed notices on Internet forums and art show web sites. We extended all customer services so that we could quickly respond by phone or email to everyone. To make the process easier we implemented a new e-mail address for artists to send us their images, which we then resized and upload for them. JAS is totally committed to providing the best application and jurying process in the world. We have made a substantial investment in our infrastructure and staffing and we are very excited about the upcoming release of great new features and innovations later this year. Together we will provide every possible advantage to our artists and shows to help them prosper and grow. And as of today, all shows have nearly met or exceeded the number of applications from before the incident.

Where is Sonny Dalton?

My dear friend, the much loved sculptor, Sonny Dalton, of Mattawan, MI, may have participated in his last art fair. If you remember his smiling face at the art fairs, have admired his quirky sculptures and been impressed with his vision, you undoubtedly also have taken one or more of them home with you. Sonny was seduced by the lure of a life that enabled him to create every day. Leaving a secure job at GM behind a long time ago he has been exhibiting his work around the country since the 1970's. Now the bad part: last Monday (February 23) Sonny visited a pulmonologist who immediately hooked him up to an oxygen tank. The decades of welding have not been good to his lungs, a fair amount of scar tissue is impairing his breathing. At this time he is on the oxygen 24 hours a day. The jury is still out on how long this is going to be the case, but I'm sure you can understand that an oxygen tank and a welding torch do not mix well. Do you know Sonny? I'm sure he'd love to hear from you. Cards, love notes, flowers, chocolate chip cookies, good jokes, kisses and other tokens of affection and admiration are welcome at: 26610 Red Arrow Highway, Mattawan, MI, 49071. Or: rsdalton@aol.com Do you have stories about Sonny to share? Please add them below.

Last weekend I was in Los Angeles and thinking about the La Quinta Arts Festival, and MapQuest said it was only 138 miles away, but as we had three pre-schoolers with us, it wasn't high on the list of activities. Nonetheless, I have two cool reports from the desert, a Home Host program where the festival matches artists with free lodging and a strong art in public places program from the City of La Quinta. 1. "La Quinta Arts Festival participants traveling from across the state and country were offered a solution to high-priced accommodations through the foundation's Home Host Program," from the Desert Sun. Los Angeles contemporary sculpture artist James Hill was offered a private bed and bath at no cost. “The market's down more so this year and I was nervous about how I could afford lodging on top of renting a van and paying for gas,” said Hill, 46. “The thought of staying in a complete stranger's home is hard to swallow before you get there because you never know what you'll get.” The Home Host Program has been providing an alternative to hotel stays for more than 10 years, according to Christi Salamone, La Quinta Arts Foundation executive director. She said the personal welcome....the rest of the story. More art fairs need to be in touch with the folks at La Quinta. Such a nice idea, congrats to you! 2. City of La Quinta buys $10,000 sculpture at festival "A new 8-foot-tall ceramic sculpture will soon be displayed at La Quinta’s Civic Center Campus. The $10,000 art piece, created by Damien Jones of Berkeley, was purchased Friday morning at the annual La Quinta Arts Festival by the appointed Art in Public Places Committee." June 27 Art Rapids! Elk Rapids, MI Veteran's Memorial Park 75 Artists Deadline: April 1 Glass by Douglas Becker Where is Elk Rapids? Visit this link. Elk Rapids is at the center of some of the most affluent real estate in northern Michigan, on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay, near Charlevoix and Harbor Springs. This area has really blossomed with new homes, golf courses and galleries in the last ten years, making it a desired vacation and second home location, for people from Chicago and Detroit. It is held in Veteran's Memorial Park, by Grand Traverse Bay in the heart of this charming harbor town. Patrons can walk two short blocks where they will find restaurants, antique shops and art galleries. Elk Rapids already attracts an art-loving clientele the year around. Patterned after the very successful Charlevoix Waterfront Art Fair, the organizers have planned every detail including a reception (appetizers and wine) the night before for the artists and volunteers. The next morning volunteers are on hand with golf carts at 5 am to unload artists vans and help with setup. Then the sun comes out and the people show up. As they know this is a one day show so it is "now or never." Testimonials from artists: *This was a terrific show, well organized, advertised, and well attended. Glad to be in the show. *My compliments to all involved. The art presented was upscale. Very well done. *Thanks for selecting fine art (as opposed to crafts). It's very difficult to find art shows, and if you continue to keep a high standard and accept only fine art, you will get that reputation and buyers coming with the knowledge that it is an art show and they are prepared to spend accordingly. For more information and to download an application visit: www.artrapids.org.

If you love art fairs as I do, you have probably noticed over the years that there are many couples doing art shows, each with their own body of work. Couples like this are truly hostages to fortune, throwing all their financial future into the vagaries of the art fair life: each making serious art, jurying into the art fairs where there is money to be made and being successful selling the art at the event. "All She Ever Wanted"-mixed media by Kathrine Allen-Coleman Scott Coleman and Kathrine Allen-Coleman from Jackson, GA, are a good example of this. They have not held "jobs" for many years and they rely on their art, almost entirely one-of-a-kind imagery, for their livelihood. These people are not making "products", but continually challenge themselves to create art that has meaning to them and also to you. "Boat Series 3" - watercolor by Scott Coleman Scott, the traditionalist, has been a full-time painter, mostly with watercolor since 1972. Kathrine joined him at the art fairs about ten years ago skipping lightly through painting styles until most recently landing on a special look, a mixed media series featuring vintage clothing that has been garnering her prizes and acceptance at the best art fairs. Lucky you, in Florida, you will be able to meet them in Miami at the Coconut Grove Art Festival on President's Day weekend! Art Found at Goodwill Sells for Thousands

Associated Press - January 25, 2009 5:05 PM ET NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A chance find by a Goodwill worker in Nashville turned up a 100-year-old original water color painting worth more than $6,000. Read the rest of the story here: http://www.wrcbtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=9729541 Artists who have been in this business for awhile know that their work turns up at garage sales, thrift shops, on eBay, and at auctions. I personally receive inquiries about my husband's work -- too often the owners want to sell it back to us :) A typical story is similar to this one by Carol Weber, wife of painter, Michael Weber: I was in an antique mall in Leesburg, FL, found one of Michael's paintings and bought it for around $5.00. The following weekend we hung it in our booth for sale and sold it for several hundred dollars! I know there is outstanding work at the art fairs, but that most of us will have to be dead before it brings the deserved price. What about you? Do you have a story to contribute to this?

This sounds like fun. Additionally I am including it here for all of you who aren't ready to jump into the art fair business. These cool indie events have much lower overhead and you can learn a lot by doing. You've got to love an art fair in a pool hall! Saturday, April 4, 2009 Time: 12:00pm - 7:00pm Location: @ The Loving Touch: 22634 Woodward Ave, Ferndale Introducing Spring Fling …A Craft Thing, Metro Detroit’s FIRST alternative craft show of the year! From 12 noon to 7 p.m., twenty craftspeople/artists will set up shop at Ferndale’s newest pool hall, The Loving Touch. Owned by the proprietors of the WAB and The Emory, and producers of the D.I.Y. Street Fair, the Loving Touch is not your average pool hall; with an atrium, greenery and beautiful wood décor, it was an easy choice to hold this new event. Music will be provided during the entire show by DJs Daniel (Daniel Johnson), Ryan Allen (Friendly Foes and Thunderbirds are Now!), and JRC (of the popular blog EatThisCity.com).

Best in Show – Richard Rosen of Naples, for his clay sculpture. “His style of practical ceramics have moved into pure art in themselves,” juror Richard Tooke said. “The work he is creating now is things I’ve never seen anyone do in his medium. His work is very mature. I was looking for someone who took the 3D medium and turned it into a voice of his own, and Richard did that.” Best in 2D – Janet Rogers of Ormond Beach on Florida’s central east coast, for her watercolors. “Her work caught my eye the first time I walked through the festival,” juror Charles Marshall said. “I liked the way they looked, not structured like realism but loose, with a lot of white showing through, so the paper added to the portrait. It was very free-flowing.” Best in 3D – Angelika Kade of Naples for her marble sculpture. “Her work is rather traditional sculpture with contemporary overtones,” Tooke said. “Her work is intricate, with sculpture in stone combined with wood carving. She is a superb craftsman.” 10 awards of distinction: **Todd Cameron of Minneapolis, Minn., for glass. **John Costin of Tampa, for graphics. **Robert Hessler of Kingston, N.Y., for clay. **Patricia Karnes of Winter Park, for jewelry. **P.A. Kessler of Hilton Head, S.C., for watercolor. **Anne London of Hilliard, Ohio, for graphics. **Tim Pervinkler of Ludington, Mich., for photography. **Robbie Robins of San Francisco for sculpture. **Oswaldo Ventura of Naples for acrylic. **Jean Yao of Fort Lauderdale for fiber.
