The Square Card Reader

Prior to my current issue, I have been very pleased with The Square but, in spite of written communication, I have been unable to resolve the problem I'm having now.  I'm wondering if anyone can help me?  I have the wrong sales tax plugged into my system and I'm trying to get suggestions on how to change it.  They keep telling me about a 'Dashboard' within their system and I can't get that particular feature to come up on my iPad.  The only App I have is called 'Register' and, when it comes up, it is simply a screen to process the current transaction.  There are no options on it to change anything.  Can anyone please, please help.

  • Following up with what Bernard already said, you can keep taxes for each place you do a show stored; which is really nice. Just hit "add a tax". You need to make sure you turn off every tax you are not using; otherwise, you can ring up a sale and the customer will be charged tax for each one that is on. I now make sure that the tax i need for a show is turned on and the others off before i arrive so I am ready to go and not going frantic trying to figure it out as people are arriving.
  • It shouldn't be a problem, Don.  If you look at the middle of the left hand side of the screen you'll see a tab.  Hit that, and the "Settings" page will slide out. Among the items listed there you'll see "Taxes."  Hit that.  Or, if you are trying to remove a tax, you might have to hit the sales tax and a red "remove tax" tab will appear.  Hit that.

  • Has anyone used Punchey? I have been using Square for a couple of years and was contacted recently about Punchey. Have been reading the reviews... just wondering if anyone here has tried it.
  • There's also Inuit GoPayment and Paypal's come out with a similar system for their accounts, both of which have their own readers. We use GoPayment most of the time, and have been pretty happy with it.

  • My previous Merchant Services system gave me great over the phone support.  That's good because I really needed it.  A lot.  With Square, I really don't need any support.  The few times I had a question I just emailed them and they got back to me the next day with an answer.

  • I have a terrible habit of forgetting to check what the sales tax is at a festival location prior to getting there, and realizing it when I am writing up my first sale. Now I am storing them in my Square register so i don't have that problem; and trying to remember to turn on the appropriate one before I leave home and turn off the ones not being used. Saves me from having to look them up at an inopportune time! Be careful to make sure only one is on, or you can accidentally charge multiple sales taxes on a sale.
  • Excellent points, Mark.  SalesVu has no contract.  You don't have to buy any equipment.  The rate is lower than Square (not by much, and of course you have to process at least $560 per month)  If you have no need for inventory management, advanced reporting, and the other things that come with a POS system, it has little advantage over Square (except for the support).  Before I used SalesVu, I had a processing deal that netted out about 2.1% with all the fees, but I wanted the mobility of the iPad app.  Again, I have nothing against Square, I have it available if anything ever goes wrong with SalesVu. I agree that the old school processing model does not fit our business model at all though.

  • Please let me clarify: I will never use a processor who charges a fee over and above their processing fee (i.e. the 2.75% or 3.25%)... I will not pay for equipment, low volume, annual contract fees, reporting fees, swipe fees, etc, etc

I did the google search on square complaints.... Many of the places it took me were obvious campaigns to smear Square and appeared to be sourced with other processors who cannot compete with Square on price.

Square looks for fraud like all other processors. They look at your transaction histories, they seek to minimize any losses. They have security triggers like all other processors and they are not in the business to lose money.

However, I did see the same people posting the same complaints on multiple sites and always there were other processors (often the same processors) who would follow on/pile on trying to diss Square. But I do not see their business model for card processing going away. The end approaches for the old model of card processing, with all it's opportunities for added revenue, contracts loaded with hidden fees and opportunities to generate revenue if you as a client don't want their services any more...

I am dying to see if any sort of class-action lawsuit ever makes it to court. I think that because of the way that their service contract is written, that they will walk away unscathed...

  • First Data also has a system like the square which goes onto your smart phone in the same manner.  No monthly fee, no minimum fee, swipe charge is a little less than square, key in rate is about the same.  The device which is free for the first one but it does cost if you have to replace it.  It seems sturdier than the square also a little larger.  I have signed up for it since it didn't cost anything but have not used it yet - first show of the season for me is next month.  Meanwhile, I have my square as back-up.

  • At least with Square, it might not have all the bells and whistles yet but you get what you get-no hidden costs. I imagine that the debate will go on  and there will always be the next "big thing" out there. But if your happy and you like what you have -why would you change?- yes, the fee is a significant factor but if you have to buy into a contract that's a whole different ball of wax. I'll stick with Square for now. Like Mark said- nobody has ever complained.
