The broad theme of "Wide Open 6" encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love of wide open spaces, arms wide open, eyes wide open but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite wide open to attack corruption failure.  What kind of fantasy is this?  What does it really indicate?  This juried show looks to explore this idea of "wide open" in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche.

Images of submissions will be posted to the show website and Facebook page with the artist name and a link back to the website of the artists choice (so it's great for your SEO, too!)...and did we mention the cash prizes and a public jury?

All submissions are essentially donations-they'll be sold at the show to benefit Sam's Voice, an organization started by a NJ family whose youngest son, Sam is significantly impacted by autism.  In April of 2012, Hagrid, an autism service dog, came into their lives and changed them forever.

See www.samsvoice.org/Our_Story.html to learn more about how Hagrid has been an absolute miracle for the family and why they're dedicated to raising funds for Heeling Autism and helping other families bring service dogs into their lives.

Why is ART so damned expensive?

  • The prestige factor
  • Dollars are easier to measure than beauty
  • The thrill of the hunt
  • New money skews the market

December 1-4 Miami Beach hosts Art Basel, the US's largest contemporary art fair, where the art sells in the $1,000,000 range and the elite meet to hang out and "out-status" one another. At the nation's fine art street fairs we often debate prices with one another and I laughed out loud when I read this (heard often at the shows):  “If I can’t sell something, I just double the price.” That’s what Ernst Beyeler, the great Swiss dealer who helped found Art Basel, reportedly said. Some people actually prefer to pay more than makes sense.

Wow! There was even a squatter show that brought out the police to shut it down:  http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/12/02/2529410/south-beach-art-fair-shut-down.html
