Custom pieces? Why yes!

I guess it's a perk from being on the art fair scene, but I get requests to do custom work. Yay! I love custom work, it brings new ideas for the fairs too. My latest is someone who wants me to shoot the minifigures at Campus Martius skating rink in Detroit. This is so cool. So how many of you accept requests to do custom work?

  • Thanks Jacki!  It was really mostly the customer's design.  But I thought it needed a little added color so I send him pics of what the patina would look like and he liked it.

I don't charge a design fee either, because I do not give away the rights to the design, so I figure I can use it again.

  • Roxanne, I took a look at the copper necklace you made.  Just gorgeous!  I loved the blue you added to it for color.

  • Hmm... I do not charge a design fee. I just say that they get the first edition of the print and all other prints go into the art fairs for more sales. But that I guess is a photography thing...

  • As a wood sculptor a number of my sales come from commissions after the art shows. People will contact me after a fair and let me know which one they saw me at. They then want to know if I can do a sculpture for them of a particular item.  I also take custom orders during many shows. Like Richard I usually charge a design fee and tend to price it above what I've already got on hand.

  • I do custom work all the time, everything from saddles to billfolds. For unusual projects I will price it 20% above a standard product and possible add on a $35 design fee. If I think I can sell more of the custom version I may make two or three of the custom item to put into inventory.
  • I do.  The most recent was a custom anniversary necklace and earrings.  It was their "copper" anniversary, so he wanted something in copper.  I wrote a blog post about how he helped me design it, all by email.  http://shanghaitai.blogspot.com/2013/07/custom-anniversary-necklace...

  • Well - I guess the photography field is a little different. All I have to do is set up the Lego Minifigures for the shot and take another shot of the background and merge to two together in photoshop...

  • I did custom acrylic painting for years.Plenty of commissions and the due dates kept stretching out longer and longer. I finally quite since it had turned into a job rather than art. Much happier now.
