Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

I had to share with you an email I rec'd this morning from a young man that was looking at my artwork, with his family at the Gold Coast show in Chgo.  As I talked with his parents about my artwork/life/how they're visiting out of town, I noticed their son fixating on one of my antique pieces.  A small metal item with an antique griffen, embellished with a crystal.  My small, affordable items.  As they were saying good bye, I asked him why he was so absorbed by the piece.  He told me he loves mystical creatures and recognized the griffen.  I told him I want to give it to him as a gift from me to him.  He couldn't believe it.  His dad kept trying to offer me money and I said that no, his appreciation for the arts was priceless.

This was his email:

Dear Ms. Alison,
Thank you soooo much for generously giving me my favorite piece of artwork you have made.  I will always treasure it,
no matter what happens, it will always be my favorite.  I just love mystical creatures, from dragons to unicorns.  They are all awesome!!
Thank you sooo much for giving it to me!  I am sending you a couple photos to show you that I'm also an artist.  I submitted an arbor day poster for a school district-wide contest and my poster won first place! It kind of reminds me of your stained glass!  Well I'm going to wrap
this up and say THANK YOU one more time!!
If you would like, write back with your home address and I will send you something through snail mail.
Take care and thanks again,
Luc Walz
Just made my day.  Especially in this era of tweeting/facebooking/PS 3 playing youth!

Thanks again, everyone.  I posted this to show what a wonderful gesture this kid gave to me.  I know we all have kind hearts but his email to me is what made my day.  :-)

I have done similar things in the past Allison and it always feels uplifting to give a small item to someone who adores it but can't buy it.   Kudos to you.

That was a really great gesture to do Alison. It is obvious that he will be a very good future artist and you might even see him participating in shows as he gets older.

Marc...this was such a positive post and didn't need to be muddied up with negativity. You should have done a review as a different post.

It is sad because she does work very hard but her booth fees keep increasing, for the most part and with poor sales, people are not coming back.  Then she gets the 'vendors' to replace and there goes the show.  I walked around the show and have never seen so much commerical junk in my life.  Whatta bummer.  Sorry ur show didn't go well!

I did the Gold Coast and found it awful. Moderate crowds, few "wealthy" buyers or people from the weathly area around. My things are $400 + so not tourist items. My sales were 1/10th of normal. Amy seemed to work hard but too many "artists" were not very good. A woman across from me was selling very simple art and this was her first show ever. She is a college student and does this part time. Her booth was not very good, her tent was bent and had no weights. I'd heard the show was great so I paid the $620 booth fee, the Michigan Ave hotel rates, the parking fees, OMG. But in fact, the quality of the fair was pretty bad. I will never do another one. I've also heard the quality of all Amy's shows is going down. She worked very hard so it's surprising.

Thx ladies.  Alot of times I'll bring these little glass turtles and fish to a show, put it in a bowl for a freebie for the kids.  They love it. Like I"m giving them gold!  Gotta love the 'live in the moment' that kids do.  Thx again for all the cyber hugs!

This post warmed my heart and made me smile.  Thank you for posting and for what you did.  Luc was right, he WILL remember that forever and how much it meant to him, and one day he'll do that for someone else!  *sending cyber hug to you*
