A sloppy, wet day at Penrod 2010

After hearing great reports about last year's Penrod show, I was thrilled to be admitted this year- the first time I applied to it. But wouldn't you just know that Indiana has been parched dry as a bone for 7 straight weeks, and the heavens opened the floodgates Saturday morning? The crowds simply never arrived, even when the sun came out in the afternoon. Sunday and Monday have been beautiful again.

All in all, I heard a tremendous amount of grumbling about sales being off, and the observation was that no one was seen carrying around bags for purchases and goodies- not even food. On the plus side, one of my customers said the parking was great for a change because there wasn't anyone there!

Personally, I would have been more than satisfied with my sales if it had been a small, inexpensive show, but for Penrod, they were pretty miserable. But I fared way better than my neighbor who didn't even cover her entry fee.

The volunteers looked like they were working hard, and my husband and I were really happy a couple of times to hitch a ride on one of the golf carts they zoom around on. If you've never been to the IMA grounds, they are not only beautiful, they are enormous, and exhibitor parking is a couple miles from your booth location, no matter which section you're in. There are shuttle buses, but I never saw one when I needed it.

I'll probably try again next year, just like Pollyanna. It can't get rained out 2 years in a row, can it?

  • Anything but Blue. Nice space but absolute hell to get out of there. People were still trying to get out 5 hours after the show ended.

  • I got accepted to the 2011 Penrod Show. This will be my first time at the show. Is there a certain area I should ask for? Yellow? I live in Atlanta since it is so far I feel I need to add another show  the following weekend Sept 17-18 in the area to make the expenses pay off. Any ideas? Thanks!
  • Robert, thanks so much for this great link! The writer captures exactly the spirit of art fairs. What an excellent essay and wonderful images.
  • We did OK at the show, about 3/4 of what we did last year, and if a nibble or two turn out that have come in since the show, it may be better than last year, at least I can hope.

Here's a great blog post from someone I met at the show:

  • Sorry to hear about your experiences, Jenni and Robert. Considering what I've heard, I've decided I actually did pretty well after all.

I was also in Yellow, and we had a swamp, but it was out in front of the tents fortunately. The volunteers finally showed up with some straw for the mess at about 5:30- way too late. I wonder if being stuck way down in the far south end of Yellow is so far removed, it just took them that long to get to us. I have a friend who was in Green who reported she had a lake in her aisle, so it was everywhere.

Some of the problems on getting out that I observed stemmed from people just not following directions and being sort of selfish. People were trying to drive the wrong direction on one-way roads, and I saw a woman who took up an entire (and very precious) parking spot with bins of her inventory. The volunteers were blowing a gasket at that one, since cars were clear out on Michigan Road trying to just get in the gate. At least they jumped in and tried to help her load them up quickly.
  • here's a blogger's view with some nice images. Looks like there was some nice 2D work at the show: http://lindsloves.blogspot.com/2010/09/penrod-art-fair.html
  • I had a swamp in my tent. I felt worse for the girl next to me who was at the bottom of the "lake". If people could have actually gotten into my tent I might have done okay, but the mud was so thick they were sinking in it. Sales were great for the first two hours actually, despite the rain. And then the rain stopped and no one came. Sales were terrible in the afternoon, but then again, that was when the swamp was at it's worst. I didn't cover my expenses...what a pain. At least I was in yellow - where I was packed up and on my way by 8 p.m.
Also, if the museum wouldn't have overwatered their grounds all summer I might not have had a swamp.
That said, I will try again next year.
  • I've done the show for 22 years. It's rained twice in all that time. there may have been sprinkles other times, but this was the worst since 1988. I had a double booth and just made back expenses. That's lot of work for nothing ;-/ part of that was due to not getting frame stock shipped in time, with a shipment of frames arriving Friday afternoon (I'm local, BTW). I was able to get about a half dozen pieces framed up late Friday night after setting the booth up, and then was able to get a few more done on site while watching the sparse crowds in the drizzle. I probably would have doubled or tripled my sales if the work had been ready, but that's my fault. From hearing a few others, though, I'm lucky enough not to have taken a loss. My back was giving me payback on Sunday morning after the load out.

I guess the Blue section may have finished moving out today ;-) I used to be in that one; nice section with the tents under the trees for shade, wide grassy area leading down to a fountain and the Symphony playing. Unfortunately there is limited parking space there for the field to park for the load out, not to mention having to cart stuff the length of a football field across the grass. At 7:30 PM, there was still a long line of people waiting at the gate to get in for that section. I didn't leave one year until about 10:00 PM. Not a place to be if you want to get home in a hurry.
