I am switching over from my current credit card processing system to the Square and have a couple of questions.
I've been practicing with the Square for a couple of weeks but will be using it for the first time at St. James and am just a little nervous about it. There has been a fair amount of conversation about it on this site but I haven't been able to find anything that addresses my question. Hopefully, someone on here will be able to help me.
Is there any way to make a manual entry when using this system? If a card is bent or dirty or anything that prevents it's swiping correctly, is there any way possible to make a manual entry? If so, could you please give me a brief lesson on how to do this?
One possible negative that concerns me with the Square is that there seems to be no live support that one can talk to about any sort of problem. With other systems, if you run into a problem that you can't solve, you can usually pick up the phone and get a customer support person to actually talk with. I haven't found this capabilty with the Square.
Any tips, advice, things to watch out for, etc. would be greaty appreciated. I'll be carrying a back-up system but I'd like to think that things will go smoothly the first time. Thanks to any, and all, that would care to offer some input on this subject

I am getting ready for my first show in less than a month
I am just starting to look into the whole topic of how best to accept credit cards
Since this discussion is over 1 1/2 years old, I thought there might be some new info out there
I have an IPhone - do I need something larger?
Is SQUARE the best way to go?
Thanks,
Bob
Thanks to all for the tips. Great topic. Got the Square after my other processing system kept coming up with this new charge for that, and this new charge for this. I'm saving so much money, it's unreal. And I love the way you can log into ur acct online and see a spreadsheet of sales, time of sales, etc. I did have an issue with a transaction (my mistake, not the customer) and realized that there was only an email contact. Panic set in but they did email me right back with solutions. I also use my iPhone instead of an iPad and I bought one of the "pens" to have customers sign instead of using their finger but I do wish I had an iPad for the function that Cassius says is available for it. Much easier than trying to decipher what I put in the description section! Never heard of "Phone Swipe" and that it's cheaper? Wow. We need details!
Well, it takes time to get an extra swiper (or your first one) in the mail.
If you go to Target or BestBuy, you buy one for ten bucks, plug it in and as soon as you sign on, the ten buck is deposited right into your bank account.
That's why.
Yeah, if you have the time, order one for free, but you don't need to.
Why are you all buying Square "fobs"...they are FREE from the Square website....just ordered another one...I keep a few on hand just in case as well as my old knucklebuster just in case!!! ......;)
Christine - do you like "Phone Swipe"???? Any issues with it????? Thanks!
@Kim Smith: I have not used it on the phone for a while. But if I recall correctly, you have to add the total of all items being purchased. On the description you can identify the different item numbers. That is one of the main reasons I got an iPad and downloaded the Square Register. With the Register you can build your item library and all you have to do is click, click, and swipe.
I have used the square for nearly a year now and have entered manual transactions on several occasions. It worked just fine. I occasionally do a test charge using my own credit card to ensure all is working as it should. I only charge $1 on the test and the money goes into my account ...so my test only cost me pennies for the peace of mind. I also bought a backup square. I use it on both my iphone and ipad. I also like the convenience of the ipad but it is nice to have both available if things get busy so my wife and I can process transactions at the same time.
Thanks!
i have used the square for over a year and LOVE it....you can request (via email) to have your limit raised....i had no problem .. you can also request right on the site additional 'fobs'. i carry many of them, for my help to use, incase i lose/break it.....also, you are correct, it is difficult if not impossible to speak to them, however, i have used the email option many times and they answer quite quickly. also, just in case you dont know, you can set it to not require a signature at a certain amount (if you have low priced items, it keeps your line moving) ..also, if you fall in love with it..haha..as most of us do, it does pay to buy a tablet (i-pad) as you can then use a pen for customers to sign...much easier than the 'finger' style.
I just had an order for $2900 and they wanted to hold the $900 for 30 days, I was able to email them and they raised my limit on non-swiped orders to $5000. I have a large wholesale and special order business when swiping is not an option.
Always carry an extra, you never know. ANd I believe they no longer have limits on amts you can charge.
