Square Credit Card Reader

In an effort to keep from wasting everyone's valuable time, I just wanted to say that I've found what I was looking for on the Square Card Reader.  I would still welcome any other tips, things to watch out for, etc.  But, I've found an answer to the question of making manual entries.  Thank you.

  • Again, my apologies - IF you do not have your reader available you can MANUALLY input the cc information and store it.  As mentioned above IF you do in fact have the reader you CAN swipe it AND store that as well. 

  • My apologies Alison - Our app does save the transaction.  I'm not aware of any other mobile credit card apps that allow you to swipe the card and store the transaction for later.

    1. When your inside the PhoneSwipe app attempting to run a transaction and have no connection, a screen will pop up indicating you have no signal and will ask you if you'd like to save the transaction.
    2. You would then press the “Yes” button and the rest of the transaction will progress like a normal transaction.
    3. After the transaction is completed,the application will prompt you to “Process All.”  If you’re still in an area where you don’t have a signal then simply press the “back” button.
    4. Once you are in an area where you’re connected, touch the “menu” button, then “saved transactions,” then at the bottom of the screen, press “Process All,” to send the transactions to be processed.
  • I'm confused Sean, When you say manually entered do you mean store and forward?  I've never had a problem getting signal with square but it does worry me.  I watched the video but it didn't show store and forward.  I can enter the cc number manually with the square but it is the transmission that worries me.

  • Roam Data is the device we distribute as well Ruth and both the encryption and customer support has been our clients biggest compliments!

  • We use Roam Data as our primary, Square is our back up and what we use for Amex.  Roam Data has a store / forward feature if you are lacking a signal, plus better encryption than the Square.  In the long run it was also cheaper than the Square and offers live customer support.

  • I'm using pay anywhere more often now instead of square, the rate is 2.69% and that's it. But I think that amex has a higher rate so I use square when I get an amex card. I've never had a problem getting a signal, I have verizon. But I digress, one of the reasons I like pay anywhere is live customer support and the ability to store forward on your phone if you can't get a signal. The reader is a lot sturdier, only takes one swipe most times, you can also keep an inventory on the app with pictures of your product. There's also an option to have a copy of your customer's signed receipt sent to your email. That's a very nice feature. The pay anywhere app doesn't open as quickly as square but you can set it up to unlock with just a 5 digit code instead of your email address and password, also very nice. I imagine with all the competition out there for mobile processing the rates will start to go down. At least I'm hoping so.

  • We do not use the square for credit card purchases.  Why?   At the various art shows we go to, we always see some of the vendors walking around the show with their square and phone or ipad trying to find a signal so they can transmit.  To us that would be embarassing.  We have always used a store and forward machine.  No worry about getting signal.   In 6 years we have never had a non collectable card, (knock knock--knocking on wood).

    We understand that the square has no other fees than the 2.75% charged.  Does anyone consider the cost of the phone or the monthly service charges to make the phone work?  

    Also, if you are in an area where you can not get a signal, can you do a manual entry?

  • Square is a decent product but due to it's design there has be many examples of it not reading properly.  Many will have a few choice words about their customer service as well.  

  • My only advice is keep some backups, I had to go through 3 different readers at my last show for this one very stubborn card. Third one was the charm.
