Mosiacs Art Festival

This was my first time at this show and there was mixed reviews from the artists.  Even though it was my first time, I, as well as numerous others believe the attendance was less than expected.  Weather was PERFECT and maybe that contributed to it.

My "art" is not traditional in the since.  I produce fine writing instruments. OK, ink pens but unique and one of a kind.  We even heard another artist complaining to the next booth about them "letting a pen turner" in an art show.

With that said, I had a great show.  Selling more than any other show in 4 yrs. The promoters were helpful to the extent of being on call for the wife, (handicapped), for a ride to the potty.  And the venue was great as well.  Only down side we saw was no dedicated parking for the artist.

Now, I may be new on the scene, but my observation of those who weren't selling is this.  If you are setting 20' across the street (after visiting one of the numerous bars during selling hours) yacking with your neighbor instead of engaging potential customers, your not gonna sell anything.

  • Hello Tim. We also are pen turners. It is a little more common to see turners at shows here in the South (we are in Florida). I do some shows and there are three or four other pen turners at the same show. Sometimes we are the only ones. Never fails though. The biggest problem we have is people thinking we import the completed product. We enter mostly only juried art shows and try and stay away for the craft type shows. The jurors seem to get it, but some of the customers just can't be convinced, until I spend some time talking to most of them and they realize that I really do know what I am talking about.

We do a lot of custom orders and when people can "build" a custom pen it really wins them over. Never the less we do fairly well at shows and you are never going to convince some people no matter what you do. And I don't want one of my babies going home with someone that isn't going to appreciate it anyway! Lol....
  • Mosaics has been a good show for me the last 4 years.  I have a variety of price points and the $50 and under sold very well while the $200-500 did not do well this year while at other shows, the higher price point is picking up.  The numbers came out about the same as a total. I think that as the economy strengthens, there will still be hot and cool spots for awhile.  The volunteers were most helpful and plenty of bottled water. This is a show where all booths line on one side.  I find it easier to gauge interest and to provide more booth room for the customers if I sit on the other side.  I don't read a book, but I am very attentive to what is going on in my booth.  My booth has tables in it, while say, a painter may be in closer proximity.  I hope everyone had a great weekend.  Next up, Batavia, IL (Eyes to the Sky).  See you there!

  • Glad to hear you had a great show. I laughed about the statement of the person in the other booth complaining about "letting a Pen Turner" in an art show. Unfortunately there are a lot of fools out there that think that only something that they do or something that is hung on a wall should be in a art show. There are many artistic and creative people in all kinds on mediums.

I was at the Atlanta Arts Festival this past weekend and also noticed a lot of artists sitting outside of their booth and across the walkway...and would just watch the people who went into their booth. My wife and I always at the shows together and one of the things we always do is talk to everyone that enters our booth and at the very least greet them with a smile and a hello if they are not open to conversation. There is a big difference between being friendly and informative and being a pushy salesperson.

  • St Charles MO

  • WHERE is this show please?

  • Artists, PLEASE put the location and state when you review a show.

  • I was at the same Mosiac Festival and had a great show.  It was my first time for this festival.  I felt the organizers did a great job and were very helpful.  Only wish they had announced who won in the catergories.  I do stained glass mosiacs. I hope I am invited to attend this show again, it's only 20 minutes from my home.
