I had this experience at at the Golden, CO show. An AFI who I was glad to meet came to my booth before opening. I was busy restocking belts. He had a totally different experience than I did at the Vail-Edwards, CO show two weeks earlier. He really wanted to vent about management, booth location, attendance and sales. Analysis: you can choose to talk to individual artists about a problem show, or you an post a review and get the word out to an entire community. People can then form their own conclusions.I fixed Jean a champaign ( the Korbel sold after the Vail-Edwards show for $5/bottle ) and shrimp scampi dinner to celebrate our 45th anniversary (8-8-68) last night. A little late because of shows. Cooking is an art too, and fixing gourmet dinners goes way back to grad school days when they were "cheap dates". They worked I guess.

  • Welcome to the club.
  • Congrats to all of you celebrating 40 years plus.  We join you with 45 this past June.

  • I totally agree with Richard and John's comments. For the past 6 years I have organized and chaired the summer arts festival for the Begrstrom-Mahler Museum in Neenah. Our committee have made it a policy to always survey the exhibiting artists for their opinions - the good and the bad. And we try our hardest to correct the bad. I have learnt a lot from AFI and the comments other artists have posted about their experiences with other events. Without you artists there would be no event and so we are very conscious that we have to make our event an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

  • Hi John and Welcome.  Nice to see you here.  This can be a valuable source of information.

  • LOL, Nels!  Not that I've ever needed a reason to avoid fried dough, but thank you for giving me one!

Your comment reminds me of a time several years ago when I walked out of an indoor show with three other artists just as several sea gulls did their thing directly overhead.

The three other artists got nailed, big-time.  I did not.

"How come you got off scot-free?"  one of them asked as they dabbed at the mess with a paper towel.

I thought for a second. "Professional courtesy!"

  • LOL Nels.

Congrats Richard on the Anniversary and to the others passing the 40 year mark.  That is a long time and one not many will ever reach.

  • Geoff.  That is because the shows know you would pull an Alfred Hitchcock on them--releasing a flurry of birds that would drop unthinkable things into the fried dough booths.

  • I have written reviews for this site for nearly four years now--over 30 shows in all. And I have yet to be juried out of a single show in the year following a review.
  • I review too, I also ask others I see at shows.  Too much info, isn't a problem.  IF a show is going to boycott me for a bad review, well, seems like it wasn't a good fit to begin with.  I always review as professionally as possible, and while I don't send a link, most of them heard from me directly on problems or suggestions so they shouldn't be surprised.  Every show is not for everyone, anyway.  Thanks, Richard and Congrats on the long marriage!

  • Meant "many" a scathing review, some have been about "Chicago Amy and Florida Howard", among many others.
