Those of you who have participated in the popular art fairs in Birmingham, MI, will find this article interesting. Even if you haven't been there it should be of interest to all artists who wonder why art fairs are set up the way they are, why the booths have to face a certain way, where is my booth fee going, are the art fair organizers earning their money?

Did you have any idea of the behind the scenes work that the shows entail working with municipalities, park districts and merchant associations? This is very informative and gives good background on making an art fair site work for the good of all:

  • This is really funny because the original setup on Old Woodward was booths back to back in the street and the fire marshal made them change it.

The show is not going to be in the park like it was before.  It will be in the streets surrounding the park and maybe on the sidewalk.  That's what they told me when I called them today.

  • The back to back down the middle should make the merchants happy, I don't blame them, no matter how neat I wouldn't want a back of a booth in front of my business.

I wonder how much input the BBAA had in wanting the show back to the park? Being the art center is right there...I admit I always liked having the library and art center there great refuge in cold weather!

In the end the Fire Marshall rules!

  • I am totally with you on that, Bonnie. I'm sure it brought more people to downtown Birmingham on that weekend than usual, if not to spend money in the stores that day but to give them exposure to thousands of new prospective customers. It's too bad.
  • It's a shame the city of Birmingham is making the May show move back into the park. Having on the street was actually a big improvement for the show according to customer comments. Plus it was easier for all of us as well. Since the show brought thousands more people into the area than would normally be there on a weekend, I have a really hard time imagining that it impacted the stores negatively...
