Cancelled Fairs Not Returning Fees?

8869200666?profile=originalThere is help for that.

This message is from Carroll Swayze, a printmaker from Florida who has been involved with the NAIA, an artists support organization since its inception in the 1990's.

I am the Communications Coordinator of the NAIA (National Association of Independent Artists) and I am sending a letter for you to any cancelled show that is not refunding show fees explaining why they need to 8869202486?profile=originalreturn your money. If you have a show that is not refunding your show fee please send me your cancellation letter by email and I will try to get your money back for you. If you have the directors name and email that would help me time wise too.

Send to: SwayzeArt@msn.com

Please share this with the artist groups that you're in if you don't see it posted. You can check my progress on the NAIA Facebook Forum.

Thank you and stay healthy.

  • Lynn, please send this info to Carroll Swayze so she can send the letter to the event: swayzeart@msn.com

  • My bank sided with me after I sent them my info, then I got this:

"Further pursuit of the dispute will effectively damage your relationship with VMD West Columbus for future events."

It sounds like a threat to me.

  • Has anyone heard from Under the Oaks in Vero Beach. After one day, they cancelled the next two days because of a police "Shut her down" order.

  • You’re not the first person Cathy who has asked that question. Who does know? A very dear artist friend of mine died in late October. I’m sure he had shows scheduled going forward.

  • I had the choice of letting the show keep my money for a year, for the next show) or eating a $75 cancellation fee.  I am 76 yrs. old, will be 77 first part of April...who knows what my situation will be like in a year!  Show is the Dallas Arboretum show 'Artscape'.

  • I had one show call me to see if I was still attending when I said no, explained why they said that they would refund my money if there were a problem.  But after reading the fine print on their application, it states that I would have to submit my reason in writing and that they would review it on a case by case basis. It further goes on to say that cancellations would only be considered due to an emergency.

I think that this is going a bit too far, as the director, to call an artist and ask them to attend their show while knowingly having rules in place which would prevent them from issuing a refund.  As one person stated, they offered her a booth the following year at half price, meaning that she would end up paying more while receiving no refund for this year's booth fees.

I can understand that these shows are counting on our booth fees as much as we are counting on their shows but to call and entice someone to attend?  This sounds a lot like the cruise ship lines that purposely mislead potential clients into booking a cruise while downplaying the potential health risks. It would be extraordinarily helpful if people left comments in the art show review section so that others will be aware of shows that didn't return their fees.

  • Thank you for your efforts Connie!!

  • and Patrick and Vincent, we need to make that public. Taking action, sharing our best ideas and then making a plan for going forward is good for us (I'm talking about personal mental health here).

Currently working with several individuals to: give public kudos to the shows that do the right thing; setting up a virtual art fair; hosting podcasts to share ideas and help each other; setting up a series of podcasts/articles to support newbies in getting their social media working (websites, email marketing, FB contacts).

Who says those who work at home don't have plenty to do?? I doubt any artist is just sitting there waiting for the next bad thing to happen. We're self-starters, used to fending for ourselves and definitely know how to work.

  • Absolutely!

  • If there are shows that will not refund, I would definitely put on a never apply again list.
