Hello fellow Artist, this is my first entry on Art Fair Insiders. I have enjoyed many of the Artist different blogs and found them to be quite helpful, i am an Artist as well and have so far been lucky enough to generate business strictly through word of mouth. I do all commissioned work, redesigning rooms for people and doing all the labor myself. The nice part is designing a room which incorporates one of my paintings or furniture designs, or if i am lucky both? Anyway, during my down time, or lack of work available at the time, i do what all of us do? Create Art! I have decided to try and expand my art horizons into the fray of ArtFairs??? My first show is Labor Day Weekend at the Hamptons in NY. Needless to say i am nervous as hell? Entering into a world of the unknown can be quite intimidating to say the least! Thats why some of these blogs i have read have been very helpful, and some very scary! lol ANY ADVISE both good and bad would be appreciated? Thank You good luck, and may your day have been a creative one.

You can display some large prints of the rooms that you have designed and highlight your paintings or furniture. You can also label the rooms (like “ocean breeze”, etc.) These will create good conversational pieces and will also allow you to find out what the customer is looking for more precisely.
James, once you get through your first show you will be over the hump. The unknown is very scary. You are going to find very friendly artists out there who will be your neighbors. They are helpful. They all had a first show once before, too. Don't be afraid to ask questions. You can also put any topic you want more information about into our search bar and you will find lots of posts where artists have previously discussed many things. We have a great archive here to help you. We all wish you good luck.
James, take a deep breath and dive in. Enjoy the experience - customers will pick up on a happy vibe. And what's the worst thing that can happen? No sales. That happens to the best of us unfortunately!
Making the sale is not about "you" -- it is about them. How can you make their lives better? What can you do for them? People could be anywhere else except at an art fair, but have chosen to be at the show. They are interesting and interested. Best wishes. Be brave.
Dear Pat, i am doing the West Hampton show.
Dear Sam, i worry about the same thing, BOMBING! i think my most difficult task will be reading the customer? I dont like the hard sales approach, but i know some people need that little extra nudge, its how to approach a customer that i am worried about? I know when i attended art shows i hated artist who lurked in the back ground, if i had a question i would approach them! Now i have to do the lurking, and that is my issue?
You are far braver than I was. For my first venture into the business of Art Shows, I left the state and said nothing to anyone about what I was doing. I felt that if I bombed, NO ONE WOULD KNOW!
Which Hampton?
