I love The Onion - a farce radio/printed news program that offers funny and witty made up news - did one just recently regarding handmade jewelry. I HAD to post it hear for all those who want a good laugh. Here is the link... http://ax.itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/onion-radio-news/id117718066
The title of the article is "80% of US Residents Make Handmade Jewelry"... Please note that the articles are made up but sound convincingly true. I can't help but wonder though, with so much jewelry at shows - how many of US residents really do make handmade jewelry. Any thoughts? - Michelle

  • Way too funny and probably in this case, way too true! A good percentage of those people are now selling at art fairs...
  • I love The Onion.
  • I'm trying to figure out how to put photos on a stick ;-)
  • Awesome Larry! Cute! I tried making my own potpourri rose beads with a paper mache type mix to make necklaces and garlands - it didn't work well. :-)
  • I think the 80% is a little low. At one time, I even made pins from using glass slide mounts with contact prints and glued on a pin back. But the glass slide mounts with magnet backs (think refrigerator magnets) sold better.

  • Regardless, of the stat - it is an untrue article, but thought "Self, how many folks here would almost agree!". While many of the articles are untrue - made up - this is one that almost seems true - especially if you look at shows too. Not to mention all the people who SHOP at shows and state - my sister, niece, spouse... makes jewelry too. Again - funny ha ha!
  • I think that's an exaggeration, it's probably meant to say "80% of artists in an average art show" are jewelers. But who's to argue with The Onion, they print all of the news that's fit to print, even if it's unfit. Of the remaining 20%, 19% are photographers (such as myself), with the remaining 1 % divided among all of the other categories!
