Piedmont Art Festival?

I was wondering how the Piedmont Art Festival went. Apparently some people confuse this with the Atlanta Art Festival that is in Piedmont Park - Different organizers. Living in Atlanta there is a well established show that weekend (last weekend) and I didn't see the usual smattering of real estate signs promoting the event.  I am particularly interested (and maybe some of you are) of sales trends. The show I did this weekend was down, Dogwood was down in the spring< any reports we can sink our teeth into?

  • Obviously the crowds were better in some sections than others.  Our crowds were not this big.  It was a very nicely run show, though, and the organizers made all the artists feel great.

  • 301644048?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024Piedmont Park Arts Festival 2012 : I wanted to follow up with my comments earlier - This is the "pink section" that I was located in (same as Staci) - the BUYERS were plentiful and my sales were GREAT - after all said and done my sales totaled over $4000 for the weekend.

How anyone can say the crowds were thin at best -is shocking to me.

This is a well run show with organizers that are ARTIST - that personally went around and greeted and meet with every artist there. AFFPS is a great group of individuals that not only know how to run a show but know that every aspect of the show is important.

I'm excited about the possibilities of returning next year!

  • Thanks to everyone for their views of the show.  It was very interesting to read them all.

  • You are so right, Connie.  The festivals are so subjective, too.  What is wonderful for one person can be a tough day for someone else.  I really value the input from the Art Fair Insiders on these shows.

  • Great conversation.

and here's a little more from the Examiner.com, plus photos from the park: http://www.examiner.com/article/piedmont-park-arts-festival-spotlig...

It is always so interesting to see the range of opinions about a show. It reinforces why we need to have as much information as possible in choosing an event where we'll spend our time and money. Our site ArtShowReviews.com gets nearly 500 hits a day, so we know you want to know. If you've got a few minutes to leave a review there on any show you've done this year the good karma will follow you. Your example will lead someone to leave a review on a show you need information on.

  • Sorry Stacie had such a miserable time of it.  I thought the show was very well run but while the crowds were good, the sales were very spotty.  I came from Raleigh, so my overhead was fairly significant, but I covered it.  No profit, but I had wonderful people in my booth over the two days.  I was in the green section on dirt, so the rain was pretty miserable on Sunday load out.  Even so, the show management was very helpful.  Since I was the First Place winner, I guess I would be interested in hearing how "bad" my work was, since this is what was implied in Stacie's review.  I thought the quality of the fine art was quite good, and while the crafts people made more sales, that is not a surprise, really, in this economy.  I was very pleased with the response that midtown Atlanta viewers gave to my work, and thought the show itself was run very well.

  • Great news, glad the show was a success!  Sorry, just asking. Early posts made me think it was slow. Congratulations!

  • I am sorry that you had a bad show Stacie.  I thought the crowds were good.  Buyers werew there as well.

I will do the show again.  I visited Stacie and her work was great and high quality.  It was just a bad show for you and I truly understand.

Stacie was in the pink section Melanie

  • Great news and congrats on having a wonderful show Peggy!   I have to agree with everything you said.

Yes almost everyone was out by the time I left.  The green section was difficult because the road is  narrow, so once a car came in it blocked the road.  I waited until 8pm to bring my van in so they could close the gates,(almost everyone was gone by 8pm)  but I wasn't able to actually get my van to my booth until 9:30 pm :(  Not much they can do with this section, we all just had to wait until the person infront finished loading.  The Pink and Orange section are a much better option for load out.

I was pleasantly suprised with the weather this weekend.   It was mid 80s on Saturday and low 80s on Sunday.  Not bad at all for Atlanta in August.  We had a bit of rain that passed quickly mid afternoon on Sunday and then lots of rain about 6:45.  I can't complain about that.  Oh and no wind, the wind is the worst IMO.

  • BEST SUMMER SHOW IN PIEDMONT PARK!

I did this show and Paul - frankly you would have to have been BLIND not to have seen all of the signs - Did you not see the 24 foot banner that stretch across Freedom parkway.  or the signs that canvassed the neighborhood - or the full page insert in the Atlanta Intown Newspaper - that reached 38,000 midtown residents? Let along that it was highlighted on every news channel that morning? If you check their facebook page there is over 1200 people "actively" talking about it even today.

Oh - I guess you missed that. Ok - so maybe I'm excited because the NEWS camera's came into my booth and I was on the Sunday morning news cast!

The group did an awesome job keeping us informed about the media promotions.

Paul - did you miss the piece in AJC that week also? - my friend Jan was featured.

Rather transparent that you would be asking about Piedmont Park - but - not sharing the show name that you were at with "sales that were down".

I was in the pink section and the not far from Staci and it was the main traffic flow for the entire show and it STAYED THICK with customers = everyone that attended the show walked past our booths at least twice. - of course you can ask my neighbor from a few booths down who had sales at 9:30am on Sunday morning (from Saturdays customers) as several of his large works found new homes. He and his wife were also award winners and he mentioned that he has done this group show before, because they bring in such great crowds and treat everyone so well.  (You can tell by the pictures posted on the facebook page.) I rode the golf cart back with him on Sunday morning and he had just sold a $2500 painting. He was happy.

As for the awards - don't they bring in a judge? my neighbor got an award as I mentioned and her work was pretty awesome.

An artist friend of mine that was also at the show- Sergey - was at the beginning of the green section - said it was one of the BEST SHOWS that he had ever done with at least 7 pieces sold on Saturday - and just as many on Sunday - with his prices starting at no less than 200$ to $3500.

I was also able to ride the golf cart in both days and parked at Grady high school which was across the street from the show - the lot opened at 9:00am both Saturday and Sunday.. it was so close that I was actually able to run to my car several times to get some materials.

Like Melanie, I had several customers park on 10th street by the gate the show organizers had golf carts available to take work out - I had several pieces delivered to the gate with customers on the golf carts.

Sorry Staci - but it was pretty AWESOME  and well put together if you ask me.  I'LL BE BACK.

Paul - These guys totally made it happen!!!!!

The group that puts the show together couldn't have been nicer, they brought snacks and water all day long both days and when the rain was coming in the made sure that everyone knew in advance so they could be prepared - I was out of the show by 7:30 packed - my work dry - my tent wet - but by no fault of the organizers!  This is my second time doing their shows and you won't find many that are better. Did I mention that they ROCKED IT!

While the green section was behind me and across the field, I thought they had great traffic because of the shade - like Barry - I HAD CUSTOMERS ALL DAY LONG - and luckily I was not far from the food court - they guys at the outdoor oven - even brought me my lunch.

Load in couldn't have been any easier- I was able to leave my car at next to me and completely load in and set-up - I arrived about 3:30 on Friday - they gave me a snack when I arrived and even had a couple of guys there to help me unload.

Load out - was unbelievably well organized, if you were not completely ready to load - you didn't get a pass to load in. I was surprised when Melanie said that she was there till 10:pm - because when I left most everyone in the park was gone? Load out was handled quickly and well organized - because everyone was in a hurry. I was able to pull my car - right up to my booth as both of my neighbors were done. I got wet - but - the show organizers told us rain was on the way, several of us kept selling even in the rain.

I loved how the show had a mix of art and handcrafted - it was very tastefully done and had a good range of price points and items, it wasn't heavy one way or the others.

I many customers say that it was probably one of the better shows in Piedmont park and it reminded them a lot of the old show that use to be there. The one thing that they did say, was they liked that they could afford to BUY things, verses feeling like, everything was out of their range.

Did I mention that I SOLD SOLD SOLD.... I did very well - One of the best shows in ATLANTA.
