Mt. Dora Fall Craft Fair 2013

Yet another great show in Mt. Dora!  The weather was fabulous.  The crowd was huge.  Even though our sales were down by about 30% over last year, still a very very profitable event.  Why were sales down?  Don't really know.  Our display and setup were improved.  Selection improved.  Only things that make sense is that with a 20% increase in booths, the "Buy" was diluted, and it did not help to have a vendor 4 booths down from us selling a similar, yet inferior product, and shortly into the show offering "Buy 1 get 1 free" (I can only assume it was a response to our presence).  We do NOT change prices or discounting at a show, simply don't think it's fair to the customers that bought under normal terms.  The team in Mt. Dora did a fabulous job of managing the move in/out, Janet and Brian are amazing.  Tons of volunteers, and a real 'small town' feel.  This is, and will remain, a must do show for us.  Still, with 400 booths and 4 selling 'Ear Pins', one would think they could space a bit better.  Regardless, this is perhaps the best crowd we see all year, and I would estimate this year's crowd at about 300,000, as advertised.

  • It's really neat to hear other's experiences - we did 80% of Saturday sales on Sunday!  There is just no formula, but we normally consider Sunday to be a great success if we exceed 60% of Saturday....

  • My impressions were the same, Cindylee, a very pleasant experience. Our first but will definitely be back. Well run, lots of craft but not the junky kind, and tons of people. Sunday was significantly slower than Sunday, but Saturday was fabulous, and the weather was perfect. Lots to like:).

  • Alan, we also did Mount Dora. This is our 5th year in the same spot. Crowds were bigger than ever. And that is saying something. Our sales were up. We changed our display from wooden shelves to pro-panels this year and have seen a consistent uptake in our sales at regular shows. So that may be the reason! Average sale was lower, but more people so it worked out. As always the organizers and volunteers are AWESOME! Very well run show. I do not know if there were other turners, as I never got the chance to walk around. We were slammed most of the time. We always love the town, and the people are so pleasant to deal with. We have a good following at this show, so many of our regulars stopped in to say hi and see what was new in our booth! Something this show does that we haven't seen anywhere else, and we love the idea... They have a cleaning company come in and set up tables outside the port a pots. They take tips. They go in and clean up the john after every use and make sure it is stocked and clean. Outstanding idea. With over 300,000 people it would be a disaster without them.
