Why do vendors leave trash behind after the show?

This is a real pet peeve with me and I'm sure so many others out there. Any feedback?

I just finished the Lutz craft show this past weekend. All the neighbors around me were friendly, thought I couldn't ask for anything more…but...

Why when it comes to packing up at the end of the show, vendors leave their trash/junk behind. Specifically I'm talking about the zip ties they have to clip and then they leave them all over the ground (not a few that might have been missed, I'm talking about a lot) Both the vendor on my left and right did just that! They had room in their vehicle when they came in, make room when you leave, no matter  the size of the trash. So as always, I got a bag and proceeded to pick up all the ties, put the bag in my vehicle to throw away when I got home. I don't want "way to go etc" I want people to take responsibility for themselves. Are you going to throw that McDonald's cup out the window as you drive down the road? What's the difference?

I suggested to one of the ladies in the organization to send them a fine or add it to the next application. (you and I know it's not going to happen)

  • Its the attitude, why should I bother to clean up someone else's place? Especially when I have paid to be here, let them take that money and hire someone to clean. This attitude irritates me to no extent, but I have finally learned to keep my irritation under control. What are the trash cans and garbage bags kept for. There is no use telling them this, they will have excuses and explanations for which you won't have an answer. So I just keep quite and clean the place myself and put it in the trash can for trash removal. I feel happy when someone joins me which usually happens. It gives pleasure knowing that I am not alone.

  • A trash bag is always a part of our setup. When packing up, the trash is the last thing since I am cleaning up the area.  Numerous times I have picked up the zip ties left by a neighbor (I don't use them).  Since everything fits together like a puzzle in our vehicle, when trash cans have disappeared it usually ends up on the floor by my feet.  Sometimes the trash contains empty beverage and food containers from customers who have asked us to dispose of them.  We usually fuel up the night before so it is a long drive to the next gas station.  I can relate!

  • I don't leave my trash behind but it does frustrate me when the shows take away the porta potties and the trash cans right when the show closes.  Every once in a while I will read advice about weights to buy cinder blocks and just leave them behind.  That is one of my pet peeves.

  • It would never have crossed my mind to leave trash behind.

  • It's not a big deal to take your trash with you. Come on people , you can throw it out at the next gas station!
  • I always clean up after I'm done packing down my booth but it does irritate me when the trash cans disappear. Do they think we have nothing to throw out?
  • Webster's dictionary definition of vendor: one who vends or sells, seller

vend: to sell, esp. by peddling

sell: to exchange (property, goods, etc) for money or its equivalent

peddle: to go from place to place to sell small articles, to carry from place to place and offer for sale, to deal out or circulate

Webster does not define what the product is that is being sold.

I did not mean to offend anyone with the word vendor. Yes, we are all artists, but I do shows to sell my art for money, and I go place to place, so I also am a vendor according to Webster. If you still disagree with this definition, take it up with Webster.

Now back to my comment on trash. If you know you have food or smelly stuff, why not put it in the trash a few minutes before the show is over. Hopefully the trash cans are still in place. And if you leave smelly garage behind, if left overnight, raccoons, dogs, etc might be interested in whats in the bag and tear into it, thus leaving a real mess behind.

Kuddos for everyone who takes responsibility for themselves and respects their surroundings.

  • I pick up after myself, but my pet peave is when shows put the trash cans away before we leave. Where do they expect us to dump the trash? Depending on how much trash and what kind I may put it in my vehicle until I come across a trash can. But if it's smelly or too much, I'll just leave it in a bag on side of the street.

  • Lucky thing they weren't artists, only vendors.

  • Some people are just pigs. But I think that when shows include a trash bag in their info packet the odds are better that the exhibitors (PLEASE don't call us "vendors"...vendors sell popcorn.) will use them.
