Question for Howard Alan Jewelry Artists

Does anyone have a good idea for displaying heavier, bigger, metal jewelry for a HA show, since

he doesn't allow tables. I'm small and often travel alone. Was thinking of getting a styrofoam material

and cutting and fauxing it to look like marble, but cut it weird or something. Then I can do his FL

shows. Any comments would be greatly appreciated...and hey I'm a supporter now...actually have

listened to several podcasts...Connie..you do a magnificent job here...congrats on birthday!~

  • Patty, styrofoam also melts or shrivels when you try to paint it.  Just thought you should know that if you were going to try to do something your self.  I spray painted some once and it did some weird things I wasn't prepared for.

  • Thanks for the comments! Mark, it seems wherever I am in S. FL there is a HA show I should be in. Really..West Palm Beach, Juno Beach, Delray, but anyway, I'm going to be getting out of the showcircuit in couple yrs so not going to spend much on set up....just thinking and saying. But Delphine, Which is my middle name btw- only spelled Delphine-- you're idea sounds great. My tables are covered with a gorgeous fabric- forget what you call it- that doesn't wrinkle and I use green and purple and it's a "funky" tent. I can't take heavy so I think I'll do a "Delpfine."

    Thanks again!

  • I regularly see a jeweler at Howard Alan shows that uses a display that looks like what you are talking about - 2 interlocking pieces of styrofoam cut irregularly and with a finish that looks like stone and with a glass top that weighs it down.  However, they don't display a large amount of jewelry and I think the base is quite bulky.

  • It is the tablecloths/table skirts that the HAE shows really are against. He wants a more high end boutique look to the booth - hence steering people away from the folding tables. There are many other options besides the purchases pieces ie dynamic displays, abstracts, pro panel/Armstrong pieces. I use those because I can't build things like that. For inside shows I use 16x16 cardboard pedestals that I group together to give a larger top area but they are no good for outside shows. What about not just putting your jewelry in the black trays but doing another kind of display. I actually found that the pro panel desks or other similar product worked better for jewelry. The tables are awful deep so having something more narrow brought the jewelry closer to the customer and gave me more room in the booth. The desks fold flat so they are easy for me to put into my car for transport. I have 3. I did just order a piece from dynamic displays because it is supposed to be easy to assemble at the show, has the display case and lighting attached. It also all folds up. That means I won't have to transport my jewelry cases that don't fold up. I also use the Armstrong/Propanel walls and ladder shelving in my booth. It all goes flat for easy transport in the car and at age 65, I can put the booth together myself.
  • I don't know about Pro Panel uprights.  They might have styrofoam.  But Pro Panel desks definitely do not.  They are heavy and take up a lot of room in a vehicle.  I stopped using my Pro Panel desks for those two reasons (BTW, they are for sale in the Classified section if anyone is interested).  My Pro Panel desks are green.  So what I did instead was to cover the tops of folding tables with green indoor/outdoor carpet.  Then I put Velcro around the edge of the table tops and on the edge of a carpet "skirt."  You take the carpet "skirt" on and off.  You store the carpet rolled and the tables folded.  Of course, I raise the table legs too.  The result is very much like a Pro Panel desk.

  • Hayward allows pro panels desks that's what we use .... Also he only has a few good shows in Florida there are many others ... Use the art fair source book ... And any show allowing folding tables needs step up there game. Folding tables look cheap and give a show a very low quality look . It will cheapen the work being shown. Styrofoam seems to bulky for loading and pack small for your vehicle. It would also require additional weights ( more work to instal and more things to carry ) Your probably better off using pro panels , abstracta, or something home made the collapses for traveling .
  • Cool! I didn't get in Cain Park this year! :(

    Dang judges!

  • Not me. I haven't done a Florida show since 2006. Actually I haven't done a show since 2011. But I'll be at Cain Park this year.

  • Thanks Larry and Diane. No, didn't know pro panels had styrofoam material!

I like to display a large quantity of my jewelry on black trays and I

feel like panel desks don't give you much room; maybe I'm wrong but that's why I wanted to

try and design something of my own very lightweight and bigger. But looked a bit last nite and will do so again today. I hate having to re-do all this after so many years. Our best art show here in Cleveland does not even require a booth shot; if the art is good you're in. I wrote HA a letter a couple years back, not very nice lol ,but last two years have been going to FL for winter so now I guess I have to kiss up.

Larry, were you at Arti Graw last year in Jupiter? Think maybe we were close if you are who

I'm thinking. Again, thanks a bunch! Patty

  • Styrofoam will weight more than pro panels desks once weighted down enough so it won't blow over, and it has to look really good for the booth picture to competitively jury.

Did you know that pro panels has styrofoam inserts and are very light.
