Although I know the Art Show circuit can be fun and exciting, occasionally people have the need for a more stable job.   If that is the case for you, you just might be interested in this job opportunity.

The Rapid City Arts Council is seeking an energetic, experienced and innovative Executive Director to further its mission and manage its operations which include the region’s premier art center. The Executive Director position offers an excellent opportunity to lead an established arts organization located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota. The Rapid City Arts Council is headquartered in the newly expanded and renovated Dahl Arts Center. The Dahl is a thriving art center dedicated to exhibiting local and regional art, and is home to 6 galleries, a 280-seat auditorium and 5 classrooms.

This is a full time job opportunity.    Applications are open till August 15, 2011.   Does that sound like anything you are interested in?   If so, you can find more information at http://www.thedahl.org/employment.html.

Good Luck

  • Thanks, Jackie, but I'm tied to the Detroit area right now. And I'm sure there are other people more qualified than I to schmooze the many politicians, art patrons and hangers-on that would love this job. Rapid City is near the Black Hills, one of the prettiest unknown destinations in the country. Up in the Hills, the weather is cooler, the mountains are beckoning, and the smell of the pines is unforgettable.

Plus there aren't a lot of shows in western South Dakota -- Spearfish has a good one, and the shows in Colorado are decent. It's a days' drive from KC and Des Moines, too, but boy it's a long way from Florida!

  • Well, maybe you should talk to them.  Maybe something could be worked out.  It might be worth a try.
  • I was born in Rapid City, and my parents still live there. We've got a ranch about 25 miles out of town. I'd apply for the job to be near to my folks, but there are so many "buts". Like, my experience runs in slightly different directions than the director they are seeking. Otherwise I'd be all over it.
  • Hearing this, then, this could be a nice job for someone.  I am glad that you were able to to add to this info.  Thanks for sharing that, Jim.

  • It's a great little art center, and the community does its best to support its programs. I was born in Rapid City, and visit there often. Had some pieces on exhibit a couple of years running in a small local show that runs in conjunction with the Banff Mountain Festival in spring. The Dahl renovation is really nice.
