Deep in the Heart O Texas...this time...

Arrived on Thursday for Friday setup at the the fall Cottonwood Arts Festival in Richardson, TX part of the Metroplex of Dallas-Ft.Worth. I'm no foreigner to big cities having grown up in "Chicago Land" but I wasn't prepared for DFW! Statistics show the Metroplex at over 9200 square miles. What really got me was the highway interchange on the drive in that seemed more like a roller coaster than a highway. At one point, as we came around a curve, I looked down on what was seemingly traffic some 100 feet below us! Drivers in this complex were less than courteous or forgiving of out-of-towners. Fagetaboutit if you didn't know where you were going! I had heard that load-in at the show was unbearable but we were fortunate and it all went smoothly with plenty of time on Friday. A wonderful dinner was provided Friday night with musical accompaniment. As we ate the weather changed, as was expected, and by Saturday morning the temp was in the low 50's! It didn't improve throughout the day and I was glad I had set up my lights for the expected late day as we had to have them on all day as it was so overcast and gloomy. The folks still turned out but not in the droves that I had expected from other reports. Sales today were pretty dismal but we have slightly warmer temps to anticipate for tomorrow so perhaps the turnout will be better as well. We shall see.

  • Yes we visited quite a bit
  • I hope you got to spend some time talking to Marina, Brian. She has great stories and has had an interesting life. Her art is very distinctive also. www.marinaterauds.com

  • People. Darn phone. You might have noticed my banner photos of a bird or kitty on the back wall. I'm sorry I didn't put it all together. I didn't do as well in Bayou. Was down a
1k from last year. Seemed slow and attendance seemed way off. I'm not sure why since it rained last year on Sun too. Hope to meet you down the road!
  • Brian, my biz name is Out And About Girls. Funky and Found Object Jewelry for Cool Peo
  • Dang Kay we were in 435 what were you showing? We're racking our brains trying to remember! I was on the west side of Marina the etching lady.
  • Hi guys I was at Cottonwood too and despite the cold temps and threats of rain I had a nice show a really great Sat. and an ok Sun. I'm resting at the hotel before setup tonight for Bayou and I am Looking for a solid weekend here. Hope you have a great show If you get a chance I'm 439 on Walker st. I never seem to get out of the booth
  • Thanks for this report, Brian. I know so little about it. Sounds like this show has good credibility for doing the right things for artists, then we get the weather, the economy and that little thing, the election! Wishing you well at Bayou City and hope your week in Texas finds great new images for you. San Antonio is on my "to visit" list. Been there before?

  • I was at Cottonwood this weekend too.  It was very COLD...even for the Michigan artists next to me.  Not much the show can do about weather.  Cottonwood treats the artists as THE show.  I won't hesitate to apply again...but sure wished the weather would have cooperated for us.

  • Update on Dallas/Cottonwood. The weather wasn't much better going into Sunday. In fact as the day progressed it seemed to feel colder. Having gotten into a hot bath the night before to thaw out we braved the next day. It was just as gloomy so the lights were on again all day. The patrons were slow out of the gate but arrived in about the same numbers as Saturday. Hopes and attitudes were high for the day but not much materialized. The gal with $20 reprints of her doggie paintings sold fairly steadily all day as did the pepper mill guy on the other side of us at $66-110. We sold two smaller prints for a whopping $50 all day with lots of compliments along the way. Load out was fairly painless but, as if to add insult to injury a light drizzle started about an hour before tear down. So with several days till Bayou in Houston we tucked our tails and are off to San Antonio for a respite and a search for some other roadside attractions and rusty automobiles!
  • Sounds like a challenge!   Hope day 2 was busier for you :)
