What are the best things about art fairs

getting to connect with the buyer of your work. I love sharing it but I love connecting others to it.

Best show ever and why

Artscape at the Arboretum here in Dallas, Texas. It is a beautiful area (set amoung the spring blooms) and has very friendly staff. The crowd was huge this spring.

Worst show ever and why

Jewish Art Festival. Just wasn't a buying group and no pun intended there. The people were nice but I'm never doing it again.

  • Thank you Dawn!
  • Thank you, Dawn, for your excellent report. You did a great job and we look forward to hearing more from you! Here is an art fair-y from us!
  • Dawn: Thanks for the compliment! The pix are of pieces I had taken for juries - not my usual run of work (rings and pendants) but serve as bait to get patrons into the booth, and hopefully, appeal to juries. This later is not working too well - the top tier shows go almost entirely for faceted stones in gold. Plus I just hate excessive ornamentation, multiple stones, crowded and busy design just to demonstrate expertise.

Every category has different obstacles and gripes. You, as a painter, especially in oils, have a much different course to thread between juries and sales. I am seeing less good painting at the caliber of shows I do, and have a few friends who have thrown in the brush and gone back to teaching, or, in the case of a friend who did abstract work, (18K/year, tops at shows) learned the skills to be a sucessful day trader (55K last month). Its a tough biz. Cheers, DALE
