Arts in the Park

Hey all!

I am headed to Richmond, VA for Arts in the Park this weekend!  It's actually the first juried show I've ever done so if anyone has any general or show specific advice for me, I would love it! Thanks so much!!

  • Looks like you have found one of the best parts of this business, Paige, the wonderful people who are in the art fairs. No surprise that they were helpful and ready to give advice. When people join this site one of the questions we ask is "what is the best things about the art fairs?" invariably #1 or #2 on the list is "fellow artists."

Hope you'll report back on your next show.

  • Fantastic!!!!

  • Hey all!  Thanks for all the words of encouragement and advice!  I brought a rug but I think I got really lucky with my spot in reagrds to dust.  I was kind of under a tree and the ground was pretty grassy there and due to the rainy weather there was really no dust for me! And I was on the last row so I was able to store a bit of my stuff out behind my tent.  Saturday was kind of slow and when weather hit at about 3:00 I had a bit of a snafoo with my tent BUT the people around me were wonderfully helpful and so things got fixed up as well and as quickly as possible.  And with HUGE luck no one's art was damamged.  Sunday was much better, both better weather and more people and I did get to sell a few pieces!  For being my first juried show and really only my 3rd show ever, I was pretty pleased with that and had a really good time.  Mostly I would just like to reiterate that the people around me were FANTASTIC and gave me a ton of help and advice. :-)

  • Good luck to you Paige.  Hope things go well.  Let us know how you did.

  • I did it last year and oh my the dust was horrendous!!!   I thought people went more to "see and be seen" and sales were ok, just not worth it to go back at this time. There was good traffic and it was well organized. The other artists were all very friendly and I saw some beautiful artwork there.   Have a FANTASTIC show!

  • Thanks everyone!  I actually have family in Richmond and I only live in NC so the trip isn't too bad and I'm hoping the low travel/lodging costs do make it really worth  it.  And this is my first juried show, but its also only my third show ever so I am new to shows in general and I'll take any advice you can give! I'm getting ready to head out now.  Yay! And thanks again to everyone foor the advice.  And I'm in booth 440 Alison, I don;t know where that is compared to you, but maybe I'll run into you. Have a great show!

  • Oops, sorry Paige!  I just reread your post.  I made the assumption that you were new to shows, but you just said "juried show."  You can X out most of my post and just remember the good wishes!

  • Best of luck!  Being willing to engage people is really important, ie friendly, commenting on something that they are wearing, etc.  No matter how your day is going, you're always "on" at the art show.  I never know how people manage to sell a thing if they never speak first to the potential customers.

  • Booth spaces are exactly 10' x 10', no more, no storage.  It's dusty, if you have a covering for the ground bring it.

  • I will be there in booth 81.  I did it last year and it was good for me.
