Exquisite

Piece # 189 "Exquisite"A Zoria's Creation. Krista DeSelms © 2012This is a beautiful pieces of Lake Superior Agate that I happened onto in a little rock shop run out of the garage in an ally way, it's just a little place but I love it.Lake Superior Agate wrapped in round Gold Filled wire.Agates are formed when cavities in lava are filled with gas bubbles, as the lava solidifies the bubbles fill with water containing silica and alkali which coagulate into a gel. The bands formed are a result of the iron in lava coming into contact with the alkali as the gel solidifies and crystalizes. Many stones, which show any kind of patterning, are passed off as agates, but in order to be called a true agate, a stone has to show the band effect. Without that the stone is just another variety of chalcedony. Agates are named after the Achates River in southwestern Sicily, where they were first discovered.Lake Superior Agates are found in Minnesota around Superior Lake and all around the state. Lake Superior Agates are tinted red to orange to yellow caused by the iron mixed with its base of quartz and like all agates have rings that look like the growth rings of a tree.Gold Filled Wire is not the same as Gold Plated. Gold Filled is an actual layer of gold pressure bonded to a bass metal. Gold Filled Wire has over 100% more gold than Gold Platting does. Gold Filled is much more valuable and tarnish resistant than plated. Anyone who can wear Gold can wear Gold Filled without worries of allergic reactions to the jewelry. In the notation 14/20 the 14 refers to the gold being 14k and the 20 refers to the law that to be labeled "Gold Filled" the weight of the wire has to be 1/20th gold.www.Zorias.com
