Losses and Crowd sourcing.

So my van, Fully Loaded from the last show, got stolen.  So, Inventory, Display, Tent, ETc, ETC Etc.

Yes, thank you very much for your sympathy.  I DO appreciate it.  I'm moving on.  OH but CHECK your INSURANCE, mine covered the Van, but none of the stuff.................

So how do you feel about, Gofundme, CERF, etc in this kind of situation?  I mean, Pots are cheap, and it was production stuff not Fine Craft.  But it will cost me 2-3 shows worth of income, to replace the booth and stuff.  And I'm not swimming in Capital... ;-)

1/2 of me is, "Buck up buddy, get over it and get back to work".  The other 1/2 is "Well shoot, that's why those programs exist".

Is my emergency enough of an emergency?  Compared to Studios burned to the ground?  Or the potter at the last show, who didn't take down her shelves and lost 1/2 her stock?

Really looking for opinions.

Try not to hijack into Insurance, though I would love a thread on that. ;-) ;-) ;-)

  • Connie, thank you very much for alerting CERF+ to Greg's post about the theft of his van. And, Greg, we look forward to continued direct contact with you.

CERF+ has been fortunate over the years to be able to provide emergency assistance funds to every craft artist who met our eligibility guidelines. It's important for any craft artist with a career-threatening emergency to know that by applying for CERF+ assistance you are not taking funds from another artist with a more severe emergency. In fact, thanks to our great supporters we have been able to increase the size of our grants and expand assistance eligibility to emerging and alternative professional craft artists in recent years. Learn more about CERF+ emergency assistance at our website here.

And speaking of insurance, CERF+ also provides artists with extensive information regarding emergency preparedness and recovery (that's what the "+" in CERF+ is all about). Check out the Business Insurance information in the Safeguarding section of our Studio Protector website. It has details about the different kinds of business insurance as well as a listing of business insurance plans for artists (including ACT and RLI). While you are at the Studio Protector site, review the other preparedness and recovery resources, including a page of Successful Crowdfunding tips for artists after emergencies.

Enough about CERF+! Greg, all of us at CERF+ wish you the best.

    Program Manager, CERF+

  • Trying not to hijack this thread to be about insurance - can't help myself - (Ellen, that is alarming that you got that message about ACT -- they are advertisers on this site, I've met these people at conferences, totally legit. Please see this recent thread: http://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/dammmmmit-not-again-boo...

Also, please check into RLI.com, which offers good insurance to people in our business and also advertises with us.)

  • I can tell you a little about the crowd funding.  All you really get is a spot to post why you are crowd funding and how much you need to get yourself back on your feet.  You post daily updates to keep the people who have donated up to speed on your case.  But, you have to get out and spread the word and plaster the info everywhere or people won't know you are crowd funding.  I always thought people visiting the site would happen upon your page and then donate.  That doesn't happen.  You will only get donations if you work your butt off getting the word out.  Good luck.

  • Greg, just wondering if in the last week was your van ever found.  This would be so bad.  Was your van stolen at a hotel or from home?  I hope some leads develop for you.  Keep us posted.

  • CERF response is optimistic, now for the paperwork...

  • So sorry, Greg.  I just tried to go to the actinspro website and my Webroot Antivirus Program wouldn't let it open and gave me the following message: "This is a suspicious site. There is a higher than average probability that you will be exposed to malicious links or payloads. We recommend that you don't continue to this website."  Don't know if anyone else has had a problem with it.  We're in the process of looking into insurance too.  Will post if we find something good.  Good Luck with CERF!

  • My agent says that there is a non specific Inland Marine coverage that should work

  • I looked at the actinsurance pro website and it does not appear to offer any coverage whatsoever for any type of theft or damage to the artists property or artwork. It would not seem to cover what you are looking for. Is anyone aware of a policy that would cover theft or damage?

  • Greg, what a bummer!  So sorry.  Wallace, thanks for the link to the insurance.  I have saved it as a favorite and will look into it for next year.  Done this year and went out with "bang" in Adrian MI.  And by "bang" I mean got hit by a huge thunder and wind storm two hours before the show closed.  No loss by me, but after going through that, I will definitely be getting insurance for each show next year.....

  • A insurance suggestion http://www.actinspro.com/ They provide artist insurance for traveling artist. Many Art Fairs and Festivals are starting to require insurance from the artist. It is realitive low cost and has come recomended by others,
