Just wondering....

Does anyone know anything about the show "Cleveland by Hand" in November? I looked in the archives and didn't find anything here or on any of the AF sites. It's a pretty far drive for me and just wondering if it is worth it.....anything you can add is appreciated.

  • I sell jewelry so I really don't know about 2D. But although people do buy jewelry for gifts at the holidays, I find that they want lower price point jewelry when buying from someone they don't know. My higher price point sales at that time of the year go to those who have purchased from me previously. Others may have different experiences. My friends who are make gifty functional pieces that are not so personal seem to do better. 2D is also personal and probably not bought as gifts unless the recipient knows your work. I'm just going to bite the bullet and do it, then I'll know. Maybe a mistake. Time will tell.
  • Do you think 2D work would do well at a show like that? Jewelry is Christmas Biz at it's best, but I'm fearful to do it and get burned because it's primarily a gift buying show. What do you think Diane?

  • I'm going to do it this year. Mixed reviews on the show in part because of the fancy food show and the unions that control the load in and load out in a convention center. I have not done it before but a couple people said that did well with upscale jewelry so why not. The culinary show, it seems, gets most of the traffic so people walk through the art show to get to the food show without stopping to look. I have also heard reports that the show is noisy. I'm going to try it. Also of you want to drive to your booth you get one shot in and one shot out. Someone drove in the second day, which used their load out pass and then they had to pay extra for load out. Lesson - I shot in and 1 shot out. Otherwise dolly in.
  • There have been reports on it in the past. As far as I can remember, it wasn't a hot show and a culinary show was adjacent to it. The culinary show had some rules in place that included no outside food brought in, and the prices were high for the food. Why that extended to the art show was beyond me but the artists were complaining about it. My guess would be to not bother with it as I don't recall anyone being terribly happy with it. The original promoter of the By Hand shows, Jay Snyder is out of the business and had sold his shows off to different groups. His September show show in Columbus never did do well, and the new management still didn't so all that well with it.
