Insurance

What do you carry?  What would you recommend?  Cost vs benefit?  Also, do you pack up every night or only when weather is an issue?

  • Greg, Please see this thread: http://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/dammmmmit-not-again-boo...

It details a loss and how it was handled.

I posted this elsewhere, but it is very important.

There are several companies that specialize in insurance for traveling artists and small business people with VERY reasonable rates and good customer service. ACTinspro.com and RLI.com

Here is a podcast I did with ACT a while back with a lot of helpful information about insurance for artists: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/artfairs/2013/02/19/high-winds-liabili...

  • I think jewelry people pack up every night.  It depends on what you are selling.

  • I use The Hartford I had originally contacted my home and auto insurance company (USAA) but like many home/auto companies they don't provide business liability insurance.

  • I have separate business and homeowners insurances.  I carry a hefty amount of business insurance just in case something crazy happens I don't want my house to be at risk.

I would be reluctant to make a claim on a loss due to theft or weather just because I don't want my premium to raise.

  • Forgot this. If you have a lot of liability consider incorporating to separate business assets from personal assets like your house.

  • The only advice I have from discussions with legal and insurance advisers is have your home, auto and business with the same carrier. If not you could be faced with a lot of bickering between them over which part of a claim they were responsible.  I have all of mine with State Farm. I have to carry a lot of liability because what I make is used in equestrian activities.
