How do you handle rejection?

Krasl results came today.... and while I was ridiculously hopeful about being selected (and after seeing the others in my category  - 3d mixed media) I received the ominous. REJECT email. I asked for my jury results - anticipating middle of the road results  - and received 3 1's, 1 2, and a 6. I was devastated.

How do you recover from this? It's devastating and crushing. it make you question.. why......

  • Well, I did the same thing you did after being rejected from my first show, which is to start thinking of ways to make my work more appealing and "jury worthy".  I like that you didn't spend a lot of time feeling sorry for yourself but instead let the creative juices flow...I love that! I think that's the best way to put a positive spin on rejection, thanks for sharing and better luck next time.

  • I stopped worrying a while back.....just put it out there and do what you love to do. Juries always imply there is a rubric but honestly, it's mostly subjective in the long run. And honestly, there is always one juror that is the most vocal and thus directs the way the show looks. I like the quote that says;

    "you can be the juiciest, most delicious peach in the orchard but some people just hate peaches."

    Maybe that holds true about shows too. This year has been really good for me but next year I will probably not get in anything and shake my head.

  • I guess I just know that I'm not everyones cup of tea...or maybe they don't like tea... LOL. I have seen no rhyme or reason as to why show organizers always love my work/booth etc and ask me to apply and then the jury either does or doesn't accept me.  I use every rejection to try to tweek my work a bit more but I know better than to make for anyone but me.  If I don't love it.. it shows in the work.

  • Y'know, I think that as long as you truly care about the artwork that you're doing, the rejections almost never sting less. They always hurt. But hopefully you'll get some positive news to offset this bad news soon. I've had a similar past month with big highs and big lows. It's the arbitrary, subjective nature of what we do.

  •  I was rejected from the South University Art Fair today. Bummer!

  • Much less painful than the first few times
  • Yup I got in one show today and rejected one show today
  • I think the first rejection letter that you ever get is the hardest. All the ones that come after that never have the same impact as that first one.
    I think applying to shows is basically like going for multiple job interviews. Some members of management will think you are the best thing that walked through the door & others will wonder why you even walked through the door.
    When new management takes over an employer you may get hired the following year.
    You just have to keep trying.
    Without failure there would never be room for new growth.......without new growth the world becomes an incredibly boring place.
    Try to make something amazing from all the negative...........your best masterpiece is just around the corner!

  • LOL @ Bummerfair. ;-) there's a similar show in Madison, WI, Art off the Square for Wisconsin residents who are rejected from Art on the Square.
  • It takes awhile to just let the rejections go. Here in Cincinnati a group of us considered putting a show together for Summerfair rejects called Bummerfair..but I have my app in this year again
