Surgeries Won't Stop Me!!!

After having bilateral hip surgery - right hip replaced and left hip revised in March and a right shoulder replacement in June, my wonderful surgeon has given me the ok to start doing shows in a slow manner without too much lifting (and I am still working on raising my arm).  He's told me to keep being creative and designing.  We didn't sign up for anything because we didn't know how long my recovery would be (and I am still doing pt 3x a week and have limited stamina).  But we want to get our 'feet wet' again so we are going to see about doing a show here and there.  It's hard for us to decide anything for the spring -- my left shoulder is failing and I will be needing to have it replaced.  I have wonderful genes -- but those little osteoarthritis 'pacpeople' love my joints so much they can't stop chomping away!!!  I have just started polishing the jewelry -- a good activity for arm/hand strengthening.  Jay and I are beginning to think about how we can do shows and preserve my joints as long as we can -- knowing that he uses a wheelchair so we have always had challenges.

  • Sorry Deborah this is off subject. Are you related to Dan Potash from Pittsburgh?
  • Wow Deborah, you have had some tough surgeries.  Hang in there and keep pushing yourself to recover and improve. You sound like you have the right attitude to get yourself back in the game.

Good luck Robert on your surgeries.  The knee replacement surgery freaks me out.  I was told I would need that over 10 years ago.  I stopped running and am doing fine so far.   But, if I do need the surgery in the future I will fight to get myself back on my feet.

Good luck Deborah and Robert.  Keep fighting the good fight to get back in the game.

  • Blessings to you & your recovery, Deborah. You seem to be doing well with all these temporary set-backs....good on you! Glad to see your positivity shining through. Just remember ....easy does it! Slow & steady is the key! I myself will be getting back into doing some shows, this fall for the first time in since December. I will be doing my standard line up of Fall/Holiday events..all indoors, thanks be!!

  • There you go, Occupational Therapy in its truest sense!

  • Keep up the good work!  I am glad to hear that polishing your jewelry is good therapy for strength.  I never knew that could be considered "strength training"!  LOL

  • You will do just fine because you have the right attitude and are persistent.

  • Deborah, I applaud you!  Way to keep going!  It's so easy to get overwhelmed by physical setbacks, and you haven't let that happen to you.

  • Sounds like you have challenges but I'm betting you overcome them and are able to get back to what you love doing, it's important to have that focus as part of your recovery...good luck!

  • Hope that you will be having anterior replacement -- having had both ways, anterior is less cutting and therefore easier recovery.  please keep me informed -- i will be your cheering section!

  • Hang in there and keep doing the PT. I'm going under the knife for one or two knee replacements this fall or winter depending on what the surgeon says. I've put that off to finish up the show season, which for me will be at the end of September. I'm not looking forward to that experience but it sure beats the alternative ;-)
