Thanks Sue for all the info. Crazy that there is not a fabulous festival for serious art in Austin. I am thinking it is because there are many quality galleries where people can shop.
Sorry there are just not that many good traditional festival shows in Austin. I've heard from several artists that Austin City Art has gone down hill and with it the sales. Pecan street is primarily a jewelry show anymore. I have also talked to several artists who have participated and not made the sales because it was a 'kids' show and a family show, not a serious art show. Several artists I know no longer participate.
I've heard from artists about the Georgetown show with mixed results.
There's lots of good more crafty church shows....but that's not right for painters.
Blue Genie is definitely a fun show.
Armadillo is also a fun show. But they are both LONG - taking place over several days/weekends. I used to do Armadillo and it was 17 days...and it ended on Christmas eve...and was just tons of works for the $$$ I got. (It's from 11 AM to 11 PM daily.) You have to know the event coordinator to generally get accepted. Several painters I know have done really well. It might be worth you effort.
There is a new show at the Domain - and I've heard it's well organized and put-on but it's in the domain shopping center. One photographer I know said he had great sales and ended up in a gallery out there. Another person said sales were terrible because people were browsing because they had come to do other things at the shopping center.
The two big shows now in Austin at "East" - which is a series of galleries banding together in the East Side of Austin and "West" which is the same thing in the West side of Austin. East is in the fall and is coming up shortly (last 2 weekends in Oct.) and West is last two weekends inn May. If you can get your work included in a gallery that is participating - that would be great. Heard great things about both shows and they get tons of great local publicity.
For shows that I participate in I do some local craft shows occasionally but usually I travel to other 'festivals' located out of town.
This is very interesting to me. Austin is supposed to be one of the coolest towns in the country with lots of innovation and creative work going on. You'd think someone would have been able to make a great event here. I was recently contacted by Renegade Craft Fairs and asked about promoting their show in Austin. You might look into that, Frances.
(Hi Travis -- great to see an old friend pop up here.)
Thanks so much for info.!! Have you ever been to "Art in the Square" in Georgetown? Someone recently told me that was a good show. Amazing that there is not a fantastic show in this huge artsy town. Maybe that's the reason....lots of galleries. I have been to the Blue Genie Show around Christmas and always find fun Christmas gifts. Thanks again. ff
There is Art City Austin: a juried, gated show. There is Pecan Street; an un-juried free admission show. There is nothing else. "Good" is stretching it for both of these, but some people do well. I live within walking distance of them (they are downtown) and always visit if I can, but I haven't applied.
