show closings

I just read on another forum that Fairhope, AL had to cancel their art show last weekend due to weather and even though they don't have to compensate the artists they have decided to give full refunds or a free show space for next year. That's awesome!

I know it wasn't the call of the show organizers of St. James to cancel the show on Sunday, but I hope they follow the fine example of Fairhope and compensate the artists in some way for the lose of revenue. A little good will goes a long way.

  • I'm not expecting anything but was surprised to receive a check in the mail for a partial refund from the Neighbor I rented a parking spot from for the weekend.  :)

  • Actually Geri that's not true, my section runs a beer and wine tent which is a major revenue source for 3rd st so not only do they lose that revenue they also have to pay for any beer or wine that has been opened or tapped. I can't speak for the other sections but I know the organizers of 3rd st were not happy about the decision to close
  • I would imagine that since the people running St James court are so  professional and first class people they will offer some sort of incentive/discount/rebate for all of this years artist. I would really be surprised if they did not.

  • I understand the Corvallis (OR) Fall Art Festival cancelled Sunday this year due to the very heavy rainfall over the Pacific NW that weekend.  In this case, the show lost money as well due to it being a commission show.  I know a lot of artists don't like commission shows, but at least there was shared risk/reward with that kind of a structure and shows closing early.

  • If nothing else, it would be nice if St James forgave next year's jury fee to those who participated this year and lost the last day.

I understand safety and all that but, unless there is a gate, the show doesn't get hurt by things like this, the artists do.  I wish the playing field was a little more level.

  • Actually it was their call to cancel the show early and close. They held meetings with the city officials and weather folks and based on weather predictions and liability issues, it was decided to bag it. I would be highly surprised to see even a partial refund come back.
