point of a wait list?

anybody have any experience with show directors letting artists into a show who 1) havent even applied to the show which of course means that they didnt (or couldnt) jury in on their own merits and 2) blew by all those in same media who were on a wait list after jurying in. i dont know if ill get any responses due to potential blackballing but i myself have chosen to follow another path so maybe the question is moot. still bothers me though and am wondering how other artists handle this kind of situation

  • thanks to all, i think earthling was kinda right...their sandbox, their discretion (or lack of) ... and what rules? all that ....

  • I've seen quite a few people show up ready to set up just in case someone doesn't make it to the show last minute. If it's a local show for that artist, could very well be worth it.

  • If asked, show directors will state that you need to be on the waiting list to get into the show if someone cancels. But in over 30 years of doing shows, I've seen a few occasions where artists have gotten into shows by walking up at the last minute and asking knowing it was too late to call someone off the waiting list, unless they happened to be there also. Then there's a Chicago area promoter who's best show lets anyone in who was waiting overnight at the check in location.

So it depends on the show or promoter but it's not something you can count on.

  • My experience tells me that "jury" can mean any of at least a dozen things. I have also never noticed any show stating that they WILL strictly follow a certain protocol for determining acceptance.

    Their sandbox.
    Their rules.
    Their discretion.

    All that jazz.

  • ok show directors, dont shun me yet. 'friend ' got to my computer while i was on this site and posted this after a heated discussion we were having about this subject. private discussion that should have stayed that way.
