After 5 joint replacements since March 2014 - yes 2 hips, 2 knees, rt reverse shoulder -- and knowing that I am on avoidance for left shoulder surgery -- and am now having epidurals for my back -- we have decided to do a few shows this year.  Has anyone done the Pittsburgh Arts and Craft Shows, Nassau Shows, and Gilmore Shows?  What are thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

  • anyone done nassau shows in long island?

  • I've done a couple Gilmore shows and don't recommend them. The ones I did (chantilly) felt more like cattle calls than art shows. The spaces were canvernous, the rows were endless, and to me it felt like the patrons were out looking for the lowest prices. Plus I was surprised to see a bunch of "less expensive" low end booths (hair ties and other things for $1), which wasn't what I expected considering lots of artists with spectacular work were there as well.
  • Although Pittsburgh is home, I have eliminated most of the Pittsburgh shows for this next year. I am nearing 67, so I have eliminating shows that set up early Saturday morning. That eliminated Shadyside although that has always been a great show for me. I have never had a problem with Debbie and she has already been really nice to me. Who knows, I may apply in a future year. I don't do 3 Rivers due to needing to set up around midnight the night before. It is a killer load in and load out and the weather can be a killer. A friend lost her trimline tent last year - weights and all. Monroeville is jury by check - more like a vendor show. I did it once and had two ladies selling a lotion like Ben Gay ( they did not make itand calling out to passerbys). There was also a cookware person selling cookware by doing a demo on a microphone. I think Greensburg is worse. I have never done Gilmore shows but I know some who do well there with their lower - mid priced items. Fair in the Park (not on Zapp) here in Pittsburgh is a good show but I can't get in. Most of the shows I applied to this year are in Ohio and Michigan or other areas of PA. Good luck to you.
  • I live in Pittsburgh and have done all shows within 2 hours.   Three rivers is always good.  Any of the time periods are good but I do the last two days now due to other family obligations. Set up and parking is very difficult but not for me since my wife just drops me off at the show..

Shady side is always good.  If you cant get out of bed at 3 AM  for a 4 AM set up don't do it. People complain about the attitude of these promoters but they have always been very civil to me. Just follow the rules and don't think you are someone special.

Monroeville is good if you have cheaper items, gimmicky things  and  buy/sell. I do very poorly and prefer to not do any of this promoters shows. Higher end items just done fit in here.

Gilmore is a first class gentleman and promoter. I have done well at any of his shows as far back as his father. I have not done them all . I like Chantilly and Richmond. I don't sell many over $100 paintings but many under this.

Note. There are a number of exceptionally good shows in smaller towns surrounding Pittsburgh that are not listed in Sunshine Artist or any other place.

  • If you are one of Howard and Debbie's pets you might get a decent location.  Debbie is a harridan and loves to harass people.  I'll never do another of their shows' crack-of-dawn setup on show day + being scolded like a fifth grader?   With marginal sales? No thanks.

  • Shadyside is a Howard Allen. My display is on tables so I don't bother applying.
Was at it once very nice work there but not sure how artist do there.
  • what about shadyside in pittsburgh?

  • ok -- that's good information -- we don't do well in buy/sell situations.  we can't compete with pricing and shlock ...

  • I have done 3 Rivers and a couple Gilmore shows. I have been to the moroeville. show to scope it out.
First 3 Rivers great show for me. It isn't the easiest to setup no matter what days you decide to do. Lots of people.
Gilmore Shows. Done 2 (Richmond Twice)did not do well. I make handturned pens and other items. There was 5 other vendors sell the same. Will not go back.
Monreville and any other shows that this promotors does is 75% buy sell.
I have done 2 of there shows other places and high percentage buy sell.
I didn't see what you do buy if you can compete with buy and sell you will do good.
  • I can tell you I have always had good success with Gilmore shows. I have done Chantilly and Richmond, both are good. Curious as to the Pittsburgh shows though.
