US Weight launched into the canopy weight business with artist Jim Eaton's canopy weight - the Eaton. Since then, the company has transformed the Eaton with knowledge and solutions from Jim to expand its line of canopy weights - the Tailgater, Ingot, & Titan.
  1. The Tailgater's unique design allows artists to customize the amount of weight per leg required for their canopy. With no-pinch interlocking grooves on every weight, stack the tailgaters until they reach a desired amount of weight. This 4-piece weight set is offered in fillable, 20 lb., 30 lb., & 40 lb. weight options.

  2. The Ingot, known as Swiss army knife of canopy weights, takes versatility to the next level. Hang these 15 lb. weights with our C-hooks or secure the weights to the canopy poles using the interlocking design and included Velcro straps. Leaving a small footprint, this weight prevents tripping hazards & with its gray color, it blends to most tent poles, allowing the weights to do their job without taking away from your art! Weights are sold in a pack of 4, totaling 60 lbs.

  3. Most recently added to the market are US Weight's new Titan canopy weight bags. After hearing the issues people were frequently having with other sandbags, US Weight was determined to help. Our Titan bag solves complaints often heard with sandbag purchases. It has triple layered protection to prevent leaks, YKK zippers to prevent zipper breaks, heavy-duty thread & box stitching in high stress areas to prevent stitching busts, & a longer handle to make transporting these easy! The Titan is a set of 4 empty canopy weight bags that when filled with sand, are 30 lb. each totaling 120 lbs.!
Windblown canopies are the number 1 cause of property loss and injury at outdoor events where canopies are widely used. US Weight is here to help! Protect your customers and art at the next festival with these professionally designed weights.

A straight line storm last weekend in St. Louis, at the Schafly Bottleworks (Schafly's Art Outside Festival), closed down the art fair. If you are new to this business, please read and take heed. I attend festivals regularly and see tents with no weights. Granted, no weights could have prevented the damage at this event. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the artists who lost art and equipment.

James (Jim) Eaton and his wife, Kathleen, traveled across the US for over 20 years exhibiting at art fairs and earning their living as artists. It was during this time that Jim designed America's first manufactured canopy weight still known as the Eaton weight system.

Jim, a graduate of the University of Illinois in industrial design, used those skills and a lifetime of art fair experience to design and perfect canopy weight solutions for US Weight.

There are just a few options for purchasing weights, commercially made. Sculptor Jim Eaton with an industrial design background made and sold the Eaton Weights, Happifeet was another product available for some time and every now and then those John Deere tractor weights show up. The weights made precisely for tents usually come with an attaching system specifically designed for tents.

1. Dumbbells:

2. I think this is an iron bar:

Holding down the booth: Part 2, on cement

So many shows are held on the streets that artists need to improvise. How about these choices?

1. PVC in white:

2. PVC in black:

8869156288?profile=original

3. PVC used in another way (pretty sneaky, isn't it?)

4. Concrete block w/rope:

5. Concrete in 5 gallon tubs:

6. Double dipping:8869158257?profile=original

7. Ye old mystery weight:

Most of these are artist made -- do you make your own. What is the best/safest way to attach these to the tents? Show us your version.

Safety at the shows for ourselves, our work and our displays is paramount. This is part one of my project, Holding Down the Booth, photos from various art fairs.

1. The basic:

2. The stake:

8869154268?profile=original3. The ubiquitous pvc filled with concrete:

8869154675?profile=original4. Two choices, not sure what that is on the left, but how did they fasten that concrete block to the tent?

8869154481?profile=original

5. The tractor weight, hooked to a bungee?

8869155061?profile=original

6. Serious about PVC!

7. Big tent, making sure with backup:8869155293?profile=original

Any pros or cons about any of these systems? What do you use?
