I am a printmaker. I create relief prints; mostly lino-cuts on hand-made paper and directly water-colored. I print everything myself on an old Charles Brand etching press. I do not sell reproductions. Here is a letter I got from the Gasparilla show:
"I've reviewed your application and have noticed that your booth photo includes a bin for displaying reproductions of your work. In accordance with our Festival Rules, you must answer 'yes' to the application question regarding selling reproductions at the Festival if you plan to do so. I've marked your application "Incomplete" so that you may login and change your answer to that question as necessary. Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions."

This was sent a day before the deadline for jurying and went into my spam folder. I did not see it for 3 weeks. I have called and emailed numerous times but no one has bothered to email me back or call. I am hurt, frustrated and feel like I have been accused of lying because of ignorance about the art of original printmaking (plus I want my jury fee back!). What is my art community's take on this?

So Sean Drinkerd called me back. He's the one on the Gasparilla committee. He said that this was all a mistake and he was very sorry for the confusion, but I DID get juried after all despite what the email said. I pressed him for details because I didn't believe him and he said there were 18 printmakers juried. 6 got in who had scores of 5.3 or higher, but my score was 4 out of 10. So sorry...... He said not to feel bad, printmaking as a category scored very low. Somehow none of this reassurance made me feel any bettter.
These show are getting ridiculous, Browse bin in your booth photo, no browse bin in the photo, What the Blankity blank difference should it make. The jurors should be more concerned with the body of work hanging on the walls. Yes, too many browse bins lends itself to suggest that one does not create a whole lot of originals but Gosh, one browse bin should not make or brake someone from getting into a show.If the booth shot is neat and clean for heavens sake look at the individual images to decide if one should qualify or not.
This is a sad situation in that they don't even understand the medium categories they are asking for. And to compound the problem, they are not using ZAPP to send out their questions so some e-mail programs are confusing it with spam.
Anyone ever heard of using a telephone and getting immediate answers to their questions?

This is an odd occurance i believe. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I was accepted to Gasparilla with print bins in my booth shot. I am a photographer and they are all original prints. Perhaps this is widely known for photographers but how could this not be known about printmakers? My booth shot always includes my bins and I have never been questioned about this except by Howard Allen who seemed to not like the look and wanted pro panel type bins. But thats another story. I have gotten into many top 10 shows with the bin photos
Good luck Leslie. Keep us posted.
Zapp gave me the name and direct line to a Gasparilla organizer. Unfortunately he is out of town until next week...so more waiting!
I would think that it would be expected that printmakers have a print bin! Even if they aren't one of a kind prints they should be expected to be original hand pulled prints. Even shows that don't allow reproductions usually allow these.
No I wasn't aware. But all the jurors at Long's Park are exhibiting artists so I don't think it would be an issue either way. They would understand the all originals and would also probably not mind a bin in a booth at the show if it only had all originals in it.

Larry - I thought you knew the Long's Park requirement - " If browse bins are part of the booth display, they must be shown as part of the submitted digital image of the booth. "
If you don't have a browse bin in the display picture and sell only originals, why would they object to your having it in your booth at the show if it only contained originals.
Then you would explain that you only use it if you have more originals than would fit on the walls.
