4th Avenue Street Fair

Has anyone done the 4th Ave Fair in Tucson? Was on their waitlist for winter - heard that is a great show, but how is Spring?

  • we have done both the winter and spring shows every year now for 4 + years. Our glass product line ranges from $39 to $300. we always sell more jewelery there than art, Judaica or home decor, but we do a lot there, and we plan on it every year along with The Tempe shows

  • Thanks for the feedback, Jim. Think I'll skip spring. Jacki- I have heard from many artists that the winter show is a decent show, particularly when combined with the Tempe show the week before.

  • Never did the winter show. I suspect that there is no difference. Same city, same neighborhood, same promoter, same old dusty hippies. It is a bit crazy.

  • Jim, that show sounds crazy.  It would be fun just to walk along the streets and see all of the weird things.  Is the winter show different from the spring show?

  • It is one of the strangest shows on record. Depending on your medium you may or may not do well here. It is a street carnival, a self-styled street fair, with many buy/sell booths, low-priced trinkets and trash. Last time I did it, there were perhaps 50 fine artists mixed in with the other vendors. Yes, they are mostly vendors, selling toe-rings, dog-collars, painted light bulbs, and other oddities. Load in is difficult, as you must dolly on the narrow side of the street. One side allows vans to pull in, but the other side is tight. You can pay for parking one or two blocks away. We dollied from the artists lot two blocks away last time we did it.

You'll see smudge burners, Indian shamans, lobbyists against abortion, clowns, trolls and all sorts of strange people setting up squatter booths right across from your space. It's a street fair, remember?

I wrote two brief reviews a few years ago, last time I did the show. I can't recommend it for fine art, but it is a fun time in a fun town if you have the right product. Lots and lots of foot traffic, but mostly there for the fun of it. Tucson is a great town, btw, and much more laid back than Phoenix. If you can pair Fourth Ave. with another AZ show, such as Tempe, or Tubac, you may do okay. For me, it's just too long a drive and too much of a risk. Here's the first review.
