What are the best things about art fairs
Direct contact with my buyers. Plus, I'm in control of my income and don't rely on a gallery that I'm just one artist amongst 100's of others they might choose to "push" over my works.
Best show ever and why
Utah ArtsFest in Salt Lake City. Love that shows long hours and diverse crowd.
Worst show ever and why
Any of the later Custers shows held at the Spokane County Fair Grounds. Same artists are grand fathers in and the customers know this and are staying away because the admission fees get them in only to see the same artists/works. This promoter really needs to rethink this way of judging (or lack there of) in order to keep their show fresh. Don't think they will though which is one reason after doing all their shows I stopped in 2010.

Bayou City, a desperate move or trying to win us back

Posted on August 22, 2014 at 11:23am 22 Comments

Yesterday, while bagging up enough prints to hopefully get me through my next two out of state shows, I received a phone call from a staff member for the Bayou City arts festival in Houston TX. The caller politely informed me that the deadline to apply to the spring 2015 show was the next day and she wanted to make sure I knew about it. Because I've done this show multiple times in the past, my name was on her list.

I had already made the decision that starting in 2015 I was going to… Continue

Every creative NEEDS to watch this

I just finished watching this speech by world renouned writer Neil Gaiman that perfectly explains why all of us creatives create, or at least why it is so important that we should, everyday. Probably the best 20 minutes you'll spend all day. Anyone feeling lost in their art career needs to watch this.

Flying vs. driving to shows

Posted on December 7, 2011 at 1:59pm 7 Comments

So my 2011 show season just came to a close. I'll be posting a festival re-cap in the next few days but while it's still fresh in my mind I wanted to go over the comparative costs of flying to art festivals vs driving to them. I'm writing this as I fly back home in the relative comfort of coach seating on a US Airways jet.

My good friend and fellow artist Lee Waterous of Head'n Home Hats has badgered…
