Stephen Epstein - Direction Has Polarities

Painting: Acrylic and Paint on Canvas and Other. This artwork deals with the constant variables of how we communicate with one another. We express at different moments a willingness to reach out or to refrain from being available to be expressive. The various moods we have affect our energy levels to communicate and create moments and degrees of verbal and emotional contradiction. The composition is constructed with shapes and forms that interact with each other from opposing or contradictory directions, such as the arrow figurations that meet, the color relationships of each element, such as the green- go meeting head on with the purple arrow. The color field in this painting is divided on either side of the arrows into two primary colors, and the red circular shapes vary in intensity of hue. All color, lines, and designated shapes and forms are used as metaphors for the infinite variations of our capacity to communicate with ourselves and with others. The mode of self-expression is in a constant state of transformation all relative to our individual personalities and how much or how little our emotional, physical and spiritual need is to express something and achieve some measure of recognition.
