I had a discussion with the people at ZAPP today and there are three options the shows can use in how they determine the order the images are seen by the jurors.

The default is Application ID# which is generated when an application is started. The other two options are Date and Time an application is submitted and the third is Alphabetical by artist last name. I was also told that unless the jurors are told by the show director which order they're using, they don't know, especially since they can't see the last names of the artists they are jurying.

  • Too bad, each show doesn't tell us which option they use.  With my last name, alphabetically is not good.
    • Here's the reason I mentioned that the jurors do not know the order. One, it was told to me by ZAPP when I was told about the order choices because most of the jurors I've interviewed were under the impression that images were seen by application submission time and date and more than one juror has recommended applying early because of that.

How come no one has asked about Juried Art Services and the order that the shows present the images to their jurors? For the record, Juried Art Services uses monitors for jurying and the jurors are able to go at their own pace, as are the jurors for the ZAPP shows that use monitors for jurying. It's only the ZAPP shows that project the images maintain a fixed pace.

I think anyone who has juried will tell you that it's invigorating to have jurors together in one room and allowing them to have discussions. But jurying at home by oneself is an invitation for jurors to get tired out looking at all of those images on their monitor. Some shows handle this better by giving jurors at home three days to complete their scoring.

I'll open another can of worms here by saying that monitor refresh rate is critical for jurors working at home. The lower the refresh rate the easier it is to get tired looking at a monitor for an extended time.

The merit of the art? They're not looking at the art, only pictures of it and it's up to each artists to make sure that their pictures get the message across.

    • I guess we could change our Zapp profile name to Melanie Aaarolfes and Diane Aaawright.  Just like the yellow pages.

  • Thanks Larry.  Interesting.
