Hi everyone, I'm in the Madison show for the first time this year and I'm wondering how folks deal with the tents being partly up on the sidewalk or curb? Apparently the back 2 ft of the booth space is 4-5" higher than the rest. I have a pretty inflexible display, hollow core doors on wooden legs. I'm planning on bringing lots of shims, but is there an easier way?

  • Kind of late for this one, but I have the same issue at Talbott Street where you have to jump the curb for abour 3-4 feet. I use concrete blocks with a wood panel glued to the block. I take a 10 foot 2x4 and nail or screw it to the block, and then screw the booth legs to the 2x4 and zip tie or bungee the panel legs on top of the 2x4. Works like a charm.
  • No matter what you do or how you solve this problem - make sure you block off the back of your booth especially if you are in the outer perimeter of the square. People get claustrophobic walking in the square and they will rush through your tent to get out of the crowd when they have a panic attack and have to get out of the crowd. The consequence is they don't care about you or your display when they are hurrying to get away and they will knock things over - including you - while they are panic-ing or even if they are looking for a shortcut to get to the bar behind you. This is the show's problem, the panic-attackee's problem and should not be your problem, so block off the back of your booth before you open and they will choose a path of least resistance.
  • Ditto...I have heavy iron grates to hang my paintings on so figure I will just put my tent on shims in front and keep my fingers crossed. Anyone have recommendations?
  • That's about what I thought, but thanks for the tip on the early Saturday crowd, I hate being the last one fiddling around while there are people walking through!
  • That's the way it's always been and since Madison is one of the best two day shows, everyone figures out a way to deal with it. You might look into putting the front part of your booth on 8x8x16 inch concrete blocks. Or just don't use the legs under the doors on the back section on each side.

One thing I can suggest is to completely set up on Friday because people start walking the show early Saturday morning.
