  • I have to provide some feedback. Larry Berman was a great help in getting my photos uploaded to my local Costco (none of my friends are members) and the actual prints are beautiful. I bought the recommended hanging system from Frame Destination, and while the concept is fine, the clear bags provided are AWFUL. I DO NOT recommend getting them!! The bags start out relatively crisp but after one day there are huge wrinkles in the plastic and they look just terrible when hung!! I had my booth professionally photographed today and my photographer (Larry Sanders) is going to have to use Photoshop to cover my new posters with small versions of the real photos (thank goodness he also took those and has them on hand). Use Costco to get nice inexpensive prints for posters, but for goodness sakes, don't buy the clear bag hanging system!!
    • Hi Jan, as you can imagine I am very disappointed to hear this. I know that the clearbags are not going to be close to nice frame or professional laminated gatorboard but the hope that was for 1/10 the cost, they would provide something that was better than a blank wall. Lots of people are using the clearbags to display photographs for sale in art bins. I am curious if since they are being hung that is causing the bag to look worse than when placed in a bin. Jan, since you are selling jewelry I assume you have not used the clearbags in bins. Has anyone else used the clearbags in bins and tried to hang them? If this just doesn't work then I will need to pull this product.

      • I checked the 20x30 print in a clearbag today that I place on the wall in our warehouse receiving room nearly two weeks ago. The receiving area has a dock door to the outside that is opened a few times every day to bring in freight and has no air conditioning. It has been well over 100 degrees in that room. The waves or large wrinkles that were in the bag when I first hung it are in different locations and might be a little worse but when you look at the image from an angle that does not cause glare on the surface of the bag you can still see the image clearly.

        Cheers,
        Mark

      • After reading Jan's post last night I hung my test print on a Pro Panel outside overnight thinking that maybe the humidity might be causing the wrinkles in the bag. I just brought it in and it doesn't appear to be much different than it did last night.

I wonder if oversized foam core might make the difference because the bag won't have the extra room to wrinkle? Or maybe using a hair dryer to shrink the plastic?

Still trying to keep the solution inexpensive and easy...

        • I very much want this to work! Can I shrink the plastic with a hair dryer? I have to live with it this weekend (Milwaukee Domes starts at noon today!), but when I get home I'll see what kind of adjustments can help (shrinking or adding more foamcore or cardboard to fill the bag). When I assembled everything the night before, they looked fine. I wrapped my three posters in the bubble wrap and they lie flat in my pickup. I'm sure they got hot during the 6 hour drive out yesterday. The posters hung overnight in my booth, where it is hot and on lush grass, so I'll get to see how they handled the humidity very soon.

Another thing which would help people like me who don't usually hang artwork: where should I place the sticky hangers? Is there an optimal location for 20 x 30 (or 30 x 20)? I just guessed on how many inches down from the top.
          • I am not aware of a way to get kinks out of clearbags. You have to be very careful shipping them since folding them over can cause a crease. I don’t think a hair dryer would do anything. I just did a test with a heat gun used for shrinking down shrink film and you actually can shrink a clearbag but it takes a lot of heat and the creases are still visible although the surface gets a little smoother.

As far as hanging goes I would recommend the same style that is recommended when hanging prints. Two points at the top edge spaced to split the top edge into equal thirds.

        • I took our test print in and hung it in our receiving dock are which is not air conditioned. Humidity is typical Dallas levels and the temp is well over 100 degrees. I will check it in a few days.

  • You can upload the high rez file to Costco. They don't have the same file size limitations as Sam's does.

  • Thank you! I'll see if my friend can burn a CD, otherwise I'll have to wait a few weeks. I can't wait for my new booth shot with new tables and photos!

Sam's has file size limitations well under what's needed for a 20x30 print. But you can hand your CD or memory card to the employee working at the machine to load your picture directly into the computer connected to the printer, not through the console that the customer has access to. I don't know if they have a USB port so I'd use a CD or compact flash card for the high resolution JPEG. They had no problem loading a 15 megabyte file for me that the customer console wouldn't even open.
