I'm getting organized and looking at all the winter shows I want to apply to......my question is related to the many checks I will be writing (yikes!).  What is the practice for dating those big checks when it's months away from decision time?  Can they be post dated for the closing date for entries?  How about the jury fee check?

Thanks for any advice!

  • Some shows I have applied to cash your check right away and so you are out a lot of money in the beginning of the year which is why I like Zapp. I am noticing more shows are only collecting jury fees until you are accepted. I am now more reticent about applying to shows that want all the money up front so far out from the show. But, if they are good shows for me I will do it. I just save up money during the year to cover those.
  • You need to follow the instructions. If the show prospectus says post dated check for the booth fee, you can do it. That's one of the better things about ZAPP and JAS. You don't pay the booth fee until you are actually accepted. A great many artists now refuse to apply to shows that ask for the booth fee in advance with the jury fee, cash it and don't refund the booth fee for months. And then don't have a refund policy. Make sure shows you apply to have fair refund policies.
