Awesome comments all. I wanted to add an addendum, something I completely failed to mention, yet kinda suggested by Michelle B., I think . When dealing with some raw materials the prices of some of the raw materials can change without notice. I woul…

Aside from getting rejections I find pricing one of the most challenging conundrums. first I have to decide on my hourly rate of which I have a few. For instance my rate for stringing a strand of pearls is lower then for doing one of my enamels or m…

Good stuff, and words to live by. Equally as important is to have work at several price points. As a fine-art nature photographer, I have "bent" my low price point in order to conform to the market, i.e., what I see other photographers charging for…

Michelle, I'm here with you on this topic! I am also treading the waters trying to price artwork. I am an oil painter that has a very difficult time trying to price work. The difficulty is working with galleries vs the show circuit. I finally came u…

Lois, I stand corrected and thank you for sharing some info about what others sold. Most of all sharing their success! I cannot say that art forms that don't let's say conform to the theme of a show, won't find success, it is in my little mind that…

I sold at this show last year (spring time) and it was pretty bad - pretty low attendance (I was in the main building selling my By the Bay Botanicals Products (photo of booth is included with this post) and the weather was not cooperative. I went t…

A lot can be learned via FB if you take the time to explore it. That is pretty much how I learned how to use it and make it (my pages) my own. As far as getting people to become friends or fans, it takes a bit of time, however the more you are able…

Bad news. I didn't get into the MD Ren. Festival. However, the soft blow is that no one, who newly applied, got in as they had 100% return on all vendors. Not bad as the reason is a positive one if you look at it. There is a very small chance some o…

Great review! I can picture it! We still have snow on the ground here in MD, but this weekend we are to get into the 50's - sure sign Spring is around the corner. Hearing your reviews (and others from FL) definitely gets me pumped to get into the 20…

It is a hard lesson to learn, but this is something I say all the time - go to a show, find reviews about a show, or talk to artists who have done the show before you sign the dotted line. A huge red flag is the ambiguous wording - I never apply to…

To add to Alison's comment - I have seen portable power packs at Home Depot type places (in the battery/power area) as well as on Amazon.com. They range from $75 - $100 or so. Although I could be wrong, it is best to use for one item that requires e…

I bought one of those portable power supplies and it fills in when my credit card machine runs out of batteries. No matter how long I charge it up and turn it off between charges it will run out if I have a busy day.

Thanks Michelle. Problem is I already shopped around and thought I had found a good credit card company - just run the card the old fashioned way during the day then at night input all the info onto the computer. Then all the other stuff came in the…

First show ever
My first show was at a church show where I sold all but one item - I was hooked every since.
What is your website?
http://www.bythebaybotanicals.com
What are the best things about art fairs
Meeting and talking to the people who will be fans and collectors of your work.
Best show ever and why
My best show was several years ago at a juried out door street festival. I won a first prize ribbon in the category - I can't remember what the category I entered. I sold out that day.
Worst show ever and why
The worst show was one where only 25 people came through the whole weekend and the only food vendor left at 1:00. It was pretty pathetic.
Who referred you to ArtFairInsiders.com? Please be specific.
Never left a show early - I am there to the end as you can get your best sales at the end of a show.

Questions Blog Series - Question 7: How do you find your niche?

Finding your niche is essential in order to make money. Have you said this
yourself (or know of people who have said this...) “I have this
great piece of artwork or craft, now how do I go about selling it?”
I hear this all the time especially on message boards because far
too often people put their cart before the horse.

40 Questions Blog Series: Question 6 – How can I lure more customers into my booth?

Question 6 of our 40 Question series will round off the subject of booth design, yet don't be surprised if future questions bring up some additional ideas on the topic. This is my favorite question because it opens the door for creativity, its one of the most talked about topics among craft artists, and there are no bad answers.

Question 6: How can I attract customers into my booth?

The best answer is to m… Continue

Hi Michelle,

I just saw your excellent article in your blog about Business Resources. I'd be pleased if you are interested for you to put that article here, and/or to start it here and have it link to your site. Or, I could copy/paste it into my blog posting giving you credit. What works for you the best that would not mean my taking ownership of it -- it is your work and your ideas, but deserves to be seen by more audiences.

Additionally, I visited this blog another day and i was going to leave a comment, but I couldn't figure out how to do that...it took me to another site(s)....help!
