Larry Berman replied to Larry Sohn's discussion Area dependent types of art

Larry Berman replied to Debbie Carroll's discussion Maximizing Booth Set Up?
"The H won't work in a busy show because there will be too narrow a space on each side for people to walk through, especially if someone is standing there. Even worse if starts to rain. 12 panels 30 inches wide will do a full 10x10 booth and…"
Larry Berman replied to Kelly Swartz's discussion Jury Notifications
"It means that like most well meaning shows, they are running late in their notifications. It happens with too much frequency. Maybe shows underestimate the amount of time they need to jury and then choose the show. Maybe other factors contribute.…"

"A few shows offer to give you scores and/or feedback. Broad Ripple is one of them, which is what this thread is about. Two others are the Saint Louis Art Fair and Art in the High Desert in Bend Oregon. Also there are a few shows that offer open…"

Larry Berman commented on S Brian Berkun's blog post Just Thinking Out Loud...What If?
"I did Oklahoma City for three years in the 1990's. They have always had a $150 booth fee plus a 20% commission. If you didn't do about $3500 you weren't invited back for the following year. The show has a three year cycle per medium…"

Larry Berman replied to Brenda Flynn's discussion Jury and Judging Processes, Part Two
"What Greg said is correct. The shows that project the images need all the images to be 1920 pixels square so the images project the same size. The black borders should be added to any non square images prior to uploading them to ZAPP. For the shows…"

Larry Berman replied to Brenda Flynn's discussion Jury and Judging Processes, Part Two
"I wouldn't go as far as saying that the lack of borders kept you out of the show. I think it's just different judges that your work didn't score as highly with.Larry Berman"

Larry Berman replied to Brenda Flynn's discussion Jury and Judging Processes, Part Two
"What you're finding out is that submitting photos of your work is not as easy as taking an iphone picture and uploading it. Because the jury process is so competitive, good jury images will take you a lot further than mediocre images. Look at…"

Larry Berman replied to Brenda Flynn's discussion Jury and Judging Processes, Part Two
"First, every show is different. Some directors have a vision and can translate that vision to their jurors. And some don't and are happy to have enough artists to fill the show. Then each juror or set of jurors has their own likes and dislikes.…"

Larry Berman replied to Dalton James's discussion Licensing or Image Agreements

Larry Berman replied to Jojo Kaleido's discussion Newbie seeking advice and booth critique
"I don't critique the art but will critique the booth picture for jurying. Pull back so you don't cut off the sides of your paintings on the side walls. You need to add shadows so the legs and feet of the canopy look real on the grass. Take…"

Professional Photographs of Jewelry

Posted on October 26, 2016 at 8:48pm 7 Comments

I've been really busy lately, including having rotator cuff surgery three weeks ago. But this weekend I finally had time to write an article that's been on my mind for a few months now. From time to time I get asked by jewelers how to take their own professional quality pictures of their work. So I wrote a detailed article about the equipment I have and some tips on how to use it.…

What's Your Dream Show

Captain's Log, stardate 2821.5. In the Star Trek episode “The Galileo Seven”, Spock is adrift in the Galileo shuttlecraft with almost no hope of being rescued by Captain Kirk and the Enterprise. By jettisoning the remaining fuel of the shuttlecraft and igniting it, he is essentially sending out a Hail Mary pass.

After doing two miserable shows last year, I had decided I wouldn't do any shows this year (and maybe not ever…

Moody Blues Fans

I think most artists are old enough to appreciate this.

A cool story. I know many artists who have who have sold artwork to celebrities or have seen celebrities walking shows they have exhibited at. But this is a different kind of situation.

Last week I got a call to scan artwork to create high resolution digital images for reproduction. The artwork I scanned were drawings by guitarist Denny Laine, one of the founding members of the Moody Blues in the mid 1960's.…
