Larry Berman commented on Jeneen Hobby's blog post Advice on print racks
"I originally built my own print bins and frames to hold them. The were designed for nothing larger than an 11x14 matted (8x10) print and only were 12 inches deep to conserve space within the booth. Remember that anything you add to your display…"

How to Photograph a Lamp

How to photograph a lamp, or any object that is lit from within. The lighting set up is nothing out of ordinary. I shoot with two studio strobes bounced into oversize white umbrellas for diffused light. Sometimes I add a small softbox directly overhead to act like a rim light to separate the object from the background at the top. This technique will only work if you’re using a DSLR and studio strobes for lighting. You can’t do it with a point and shoot camera, or even a DSLR if you’re using…See More

Larry Berman replied to Ryan Moyer's discussion When jury and show requirements don't mesh
"Have the jury style of work on the back wall of your booth picture and the other images on a side wall. And like I suggest for other artists who might be challenged about their work, carry an 8x10 or 11x14 print of your booth picture. Having both…"

Larry Berman replied to Larry Berman's discussion The importance of a good booth picture
"Why can't you do your own booth picture and send it to your photographer to edit. Or send it to me to edit. I do that with hundreds of artists. I have them send me the first picture while the booth is still set up and I go over what needs to be…"

Help Getting Accepted into Art Shows - Part 4

No, I haven't gone over to the dark side and still recommend using a real camera to photograph your artwork or booth for jurying. But I have been investigating getting better quality pictures from my iphone camera. And by better quality, I don't mean improved composition. I mean technically improved pictures with less blurriness (sharper) and better exposure.

My next article consists of tips on how to take better pictures with…

Help Getting Accepted into Art Shows - Part 3

Once upon a time there was an artist who sold his paintings every weekend at art shows. He took a few pictures of his paintings, and for the few shows that required it, hung his paintings on the fence next to his house and took a “display” picture. The film was dropped off at the corner drug store where he picked up the slides three days later. He filled out a paper application, included two checks, a few 35mm slides and a self-addressed…

Rent Your Display

I added the option to list display equipment for rent in the For Sale and Trade forum. If you have display equipment sitting around that you only use a few times a year, why not have it generate some extra money for you. I rent my Pro Panels out a few times a year and they have paid for themselves a few times over.…

Help Getting Accepted into Art Shows - Part 2

My next article is detailed information on how to take good jewelry photographs describing the camera and lighting equipment and some tips on how to use it.

The most difficult type of artwork to photograph is jewelry. That’s because of it’s small size and that it can have many reflective surfaces. And because of it’s small size, it’s very difficult to keep the entire piece in focus. Also the jewelry medium is the most…
