Craft in America PPS TV Show announcement

At the epicenter of the Craft Industry is Carol Sauvion. She is executive director of the PBS Craft in America, award wining, TV Series. She is founder and executive director of Craft in America organization. You might have seen the book that organization publishes and of the same title. She judges MAJOR craft exhibitions and her judgment is widely respected.  The announcement for the next program was released a few moments ago: Please tune in to PBS on May 24th at 8pm* for the newest episode…See More

Jim Kransberger commented on Linda A Shields's blog post If Jewelry is SUCH a COMPETIVE arena...Why Don't Art Fairs Subdivide the Catagory?
"The classic "tweener" porch problem. Too big for the small porch, too little for the big porch. "What to do, what to do?" Susan Gilbert-Collick has offered the best advice: "The difficulty remains: How to Stand Out in the…"

"I am confused about this circular argument. It goes round and round dividing the pie and there's still only one pie to divide at any given show. Unless I've lost the ability to count on my fingers, if you divide a single slice into two…"

"Barabara,   "Don't eliminate the porch" comment is probably what this thread is mostly about. Art Fairs am a very competitive front porch and -try as we may- none of us has a franchise on maintaining our spot a the rice bowl Art…"

Jim Kransberger commented on Linda A Shields's blog post If Jewelry is SUCH a COMPETIVE arena...Why Don't Art Fairs Subdivide the Catagory?
"I agree. If you are intent on being a "professional craftsman" in your art, then there is a substantial investment to be made. My point is that many jewelers are rather minimal investors. The biggest investment is that of time. There are a…"

"Susan, Haven't been to White Lake in (maybe) 60 years. It was delightful then; we were sailing. And, have lived in Birmingham and mostly in Grand Rapids. Use to sell Frank's a ton of craft merchandise. Now live in Asheville, old and…"

Jim Kransberger commented on Linda A Shields's blog post If Jewelry is SUCH a COMPETIVE arena...Why Don't Art Fairs Subdivide the Catagory?
"Jewelers are legion, likely because of low entry costs, compared to many other disciplines. Old business saw: Easy entry, easy exit.  Any good show is a balanced presentation. "X" number of this, "Y" number of that. Well, at…"

"Thanks for your kind reply. You are correct, Yata, yata, yata was a neutered political comment. I thought it over, before I finished, and toned all the party affiliation keys out. That act allowed me to avoid shooting myself in the foot. Remarkably,…"

Politics in Art

Without getting into who's right and who's wrong (always the other guy), getting "political' with one's customers is a chancy thing. I was offered a part in a major gallery show, if I would do political art. The name of an artist who had done such art years ago was referred to me. I contacted the guy and asked about making political statements in his art. He replied: "So what can you do? You could do some political art...Say you put Newt Gingrich in the trash can, Sarah Palin or Obama...…See More

Yeah, the who-ha links are a bit dusty, the whole organization is. Mostly cause I am the only guy doing it. Really concentrating on the blog. The problem with the organization is that everybody wants something from it, nobody gives to it. Classic problem I guess. Anyway, Robert is the bomb, love Chris too aka Chub. There isn't a lot to know. I love your work. We get 200-300 visitors a day. We have a gallery show in Marietta GA two months before FolkFest.

The best thing is to bookmark the blog. I put down a list of shows that are available. If you are just getting started, you might make note of the ones I don't push...they tend to be dogs and when you are getting started, there are a bunch of dogs out there. I don't know where you are going, but, feel free to ask. pflack@whohadada.com
