Getting started with equipment

I am just getting started entering art fairs.  Do you know of any good sources to rent or purchase good quality tents and equipment?  New or used.  I live in the Kansas City Missouri area and I need to provide a booth shot for a show next spring.  I would be interested in renting a tent just for the booth shot while I investigate which tent might work best for me to purchase.

  • Typical tent rental companies usually only have tents that are opaque, not letting light in to light up your artwork. They are not appropriate for art shows. You would be better finding a friend that will lend you their display for you to hang your artwork for the photograph. Second option is to purchase a $200 pop up tent from Sam's Club or Costco. But you still need walls or panels inside the tent to hang your paintings.

As for applying for shows without a booth picture, contact the show and ask how they want it handled. Most shows will either ask for a grouping of your paintings or just an additional painting called a booth in your application.

    • Thanks for your input Larry.

I've considered the pop up tent from Sam's Club for the booth shot.  I know someone who has one I can borrow, however the show I am considering applying to specifically does not allow light weight pop up tents.  I don't know if they will be considering the tent in my booth shot or just looking at my work and how it might be displayed.  Do you have any thoughts on that?

      Thanks,

      • I've never heard of a show penalizing an artist for using a pop up tent in their booth picture. It makes sense that they would require the artist to rent a tent when doing the show. If you have a question about it, you need to address the show director directly.
