Quotes about Art and Creativity

Art encompasses a lot of different trades, techniques, and tools. The entire history of the human race has involved art in some way or another. From cave drawings, hieroglyphics, paintings, sculptures and writing of long gone geniuses worth millions of dollars to modern day artists, writers, crafters, and other creative people, art, for some people, is more than just a way to enjoy life. For some people, art IS life. These people have a lot to say about imagination, creativity, and, of course, art as demonstrated by the following 10 quotes:

  1. “The painter has the universe in his mind and hands.” - Leonardo da Vinci
  2. “Everything you can imagine is real.” - Pablo Picasso
  3. “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” - Bob Ross
  4. “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” Salvador Dali
  5. “In the haunted house of life, art is the only stair that doesn’t creak.” - Tom Robbins
  6. “Self-consciousness is the enemy of all art, be it acting, writing, painting, or living itself, which is the greatest art of all.” - Ray Bradbury
  7. “All worthy work is open to interpretations the author did not intend. Art isn’t your pet - it’s your kid. It grows up and talks back to you.” - Joss Whedon
  8. “It is through art, and through art only, that we can realize our perfection.” - Oscar Wilde
  9. “I just do art because I’m ugly and there’s nothing else for me to do.” - Andy Warhol
  10. Make good art.” - Neil Gaiman

  • Dick, It sounds like Louie may also be contributing to your creative instincts. Probably should keep him around.

  • I will check it out, thanks Connie.

  • It is amazing what we will put up with when it comes to family.

  • and way back in the archives of this site I found this post: Some Inspiration for Putting Life into Perspective. It is full of really helpful quotes and good attitude. Worth a read with lots of comments from many members.

  • I have to comment on #3 as one of my mentors during my apprenticeship in the 1960's told me "if you make a mistake, just make it look like you intended to do it that way". Part two of the story is Louie, the adopted feral kitten who is now the reclusive studio cat. He likes sharpen his claws on my soft leather saddle seats at night. I usually cover stuff with a quilt, but he has gotten to three to date. One was a rebuild of old trick saddle and client took a discount, second was seat leather on bench which got re purposed into small cases, and the most recent one required a change in quilting design to cover up the snags. No, I won't get rid of Louie. He is family and I see him watching me work.

  • So true Connie, travel expands the mind and perspective.

  • I miss being with the adventuring artists. We are so fortunate to see our country and to spend time in city parks, historic neighborhoods, beachfront locations and burgeoning downtowns meeting people who are enticed by our creativity. Our friends travel to distant locations, but few see the US the way we do. The cliche applies: up front and personal. So here is one of my favorite quotes:

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”– Mark Twain

  • So true David, I find the conversations that artists have amongst themselves far more interesting.

  • Sometimes we need the practical quote because the hundreds of seemingly little things ARE the daily life of the artist too.

    From Picasso:

“When art critics get together they talk about Form and Structure and Meaning. When artists get together they talk about where you can buy cheap turpentine.”
